A Playlist Stolen From A Pointless Idea

Introduction

Pointless has a question that featured five songs that have a two-word title featuring the same word. I thought that would be a good idea for a frivolous playlist and we will start with a David Bowie song and finish with the David Bowie song that was included in the Pointless list.

While compiling this playlist there are lots of songs that I missed because they repeat the titles of songs here, or they are not worth, in my humble opinion, using your time to listen to them.

If you want to find out what Pointless is about check out this story here, and this has been the inspiration behind a few of my Vocal Stories.

But now for the music:

David Bowie - "Holy, Holy" (Single)

I first heard this on a compilation I think, but it is a favourite of mine. It sounds a little threatening but has a great guitar riff refrain built in. More information here:

ABBA - "Honey, Honey" from "Waterloo"

This is an early ABBA pop hit, not their finest moment but still better than a lot of the chart fodder at the time. It is in my collection because I have all of their albums, but I don't play it that often.

The Archies - "Sugar, Sugar" (single)

The Archies were a sort of cartoon version of the Monkees, I was not too impressed even then, and the cartoon just made it worse. The awful Jonathan King brought out a heavied version of it under the name

Here is the wiki entry for the Archies:

Sugababes - "Round, Round" from "Angels With Dirty Faces"

This was another from the Pointless question and is rather good, a damned site better than the Archies.

John Lee Hooker - "Boom, Boom"

Just a total blues classic and this is the great man performing the song in "The Blues Brothers", and if you don't know the film, watch it now.

Nancy Sinatra - "Bang, Bang"

This is beautifully, creepily dark. The song was written by Sonny Bono and released by Cher and you can hear the original here.

UFO - "Doctor, Doctor" from "Walk On Water"

A fine piece of euro metal.

Dollar - "Mirror, Mirror"

I liked almost everything Dollar produced even though it was not the stuff I normally listened to as a teenager. But by this time I realised my taste was far more eclectic than most of my contemporaries and I believe it still is.

This is still a most excellent record.

The Assembly - "Never, Never"

I believe this was a one-off by Vince Clarke with Feargal Sharkey but still sounds perfect today.

The Mamas and Papas - "Monday, Monday"

Monday is not normally something I look forward to, but this song makes it a little easier.

The Kingsmen - "Louie, Louie"

A great three-chord garage anthem that the powers that be wanted banning because they thought the lyrics might be lewd and subversive because they couldn't hear/understand them.

"Louie Louie" tells, in simple verse-chorus form, the first-person story of a "lovesick sailor's lament to a bartender about wanting to get back home to his girl"

Talk Talk - "Talk Talk" from "The Party's Over Here"

The only other band that have had a song using their name is Black Sabbath, but Talk Talk are a class act, and this is one more great song in this repeated playlist.

David Bowie - "Rebel, Rebel" from "Diamond Dogs"

In my opinion one of the finest guitar riffs ever (maybe because I can play it) and probably the finest Rolling Stones song that they never recorded.

What a great list. I like Sugar, Sugar by the Archies- I was a little kid and would sing along with them on Saturday mornings. I also like the Mamas and the Papas songs and a few other songs you mentioned, but these two were my utmost favorites.
