Early Life

Robert Sylvester Kelly was born January 8, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised alongside his three siblings, by his mother Joanne who was a singer by profession. As a kid, Kelly was often sexually abused by a woman, which he has written about in his autobiography.

Kelly attended the Kenwood Academy where he performed a song by Stevie Wonder. He was encouraged by Lena McLin, his music instructor, who informed him that he had a natural talent for performing and after that, he started to perform on the streets of Chicago.
