Early Life

Robert Sylvester Kelly was born January 8, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised alongside his three siblings, by his mother Joanne who was a singer by profession. As a kid, Kelly was often sexually abused by a woman, which he has written about in his autobiography.

Kelly attended the Kenwood Academy where he performed a song by Stevie Wonder. He was encouraged by Lena McLin, his music instructor, who informed him that he had a natural talent for performing and after that, he started to perform on the streets of Chicago. He dropped out of high school to perform as a subway musician.

Kelly earned his big break when he won a $100,000 prize on the television talent show Big Break. He formed a group with his friends “MGM” (Musically Gifted Men”) in 1989. Later Kelly signed with Jive Records in 1991 and released the album “Born into the 90s” with his group Public Announcement in 1993.

Career

Kelly started his singing career in 1991, after his years of performance in the streets of Chicago.

He signed a contract with Jive Records, and the following year he released his debut album Born Into The 90’s in collaboration with the vocal group Public Announcement. His debut album turned out to be a big success with the hits “Slow Dance (Hey Mr. Dj)” and Honey Love.

In 1993 he scored his first No.1 single on the pop charts, Bump N’ Grind. After his mother’s death, he continued to live up to his nickname “Prince of Pillowtalk”. Furthermore, Kelly’s domination of the R&B industry translated into pop stardom, and subsequent efforts garnered ever-greater success. His uplifting ballad “I Believe I Can Fly” (1996) was a huge hit, earning him three Grammy Awards, one of which was for best R&B song.

Kelly had more songs enter the top 40 of the Billboard singles chart than any other male solo artist in the 1990s, with successes including “You Remind Me of Something” (1995), and “I’m Your Angel” (1998).

He remained as the king of R&B in the 90’s. The success of the album R. (1998), which sold more than eight million copies in the United States alone, was aided by the popularity of the latter song, a duet with Céline Dion.

On the other hand, his personal life was marred by scandal, beginning with the discovery that he had secretly married singer Aaliyah in 1994 when she was 15; the unlawful marriage was soon annulled.

R Kelly’s problems reached a climax in 2002 when officials discovered a film in which he was reportedly having sex with an underage girl. He was quickly charged with several counts of child pornography, but his trial was postponed for several years due to several factors.

Despite some early public outrage over the criminal claims, Kelly’s albums Chocolate Factory (2003), which contained the upbeat “Ignition (Remix),” and Happy People/U Saved Me (2004) helped him maintain his status as one of the world’s top R&B artists.

On the albums Love Letter (2010) and Write Me Back (2012), Kelly toned down his sensuality, focusing on the rich sound of the 1960s and 1970s soul music. With Black Panties (2013) and The Buffet (2014), he returned to more sexually explicit content (2015).

In 2016, the holiday album 12 Nights of Christmas was released. He wrote and produced songs for various artists, including Michael Jackson and the Isley Brothers, in addition to his solo recordings.

He collaborated on two albums with rapper Jay-Z (2002 and 2004), and he wrote and produced songs for a variety of artists, including Michael Jackson and the Isley Brothers.

In 2012 he released “Write Me Back” which followed the footsteps of stars like Teddy Pendergrass and Marvin Gaye. That same year Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me, a book co-written by David Ritz, was released.

Since then, Kelly has pursued to make new music. He was known for being the R&B king during the 90’s and he has sold over millions of copies of his music.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Kelly continued to amass wealth by publishing 14 studio albums, five compilation albums, and three cooperation albums, as well as received several honors. He’s done 12 world tours and a slew of lucrative television appearances.

However, following his divorce from Andrea Lee in 2009, he lost a significant chunk of his fortune, and his popularity in the music business began to wane.
