Usually, we choose songs we like by the melody, the lyrics, and by the musical genre. I’m starting a series with songs from all kinds of genres going according to the alphabet. Here are songs with titles that begin with the letter Y. Links will be posted below as we proceed through the ABCs. At the end, you’ll find the links to the songs with titles that begin with the letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, and W.

For those of you who went through the alphabet, yes, before Y comes X. However, after running down the list of these songs I chose to go right to Y. If you wish you can explore the “X” songs on your own.

A truly happy song that makes you want to sing along. “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” is a song that was written by Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, Frank Wilson, and Berry Gordy. It was released as a single in 1967 and recorded by American soul singer Brenda Holloway. Later the song was recorded by American jazz-rock band Blood, Sweat, & Tears in 1969. The song became one of the band’s biggest hits. It charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart

A lovely romantic ballad “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” was originally a 1965 Italian song. It became a hit in 1966 when it was recorded by English singer Dusty Springfield becoming her most successful single. It is featured on her album Ev’rything’s Coming Up Dusty. The song went to number one on the UK Singles chart and also charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was featured on Now 42 as a tribute to Springfield when she died from breast cancer in 1999.

“Yakety Yak” is a song that was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller for the American rhythm and blues/rock and roll vocal group The Coasters. The song went to number one on the R&B and Top Pop charts. The Coaster dominated the charts between 1957 and 1959 making them one of the biggest performing acts of the rock and roll era.

Another great song “You Got to Me” was recorded in 1970 by American singer and songwriter Neil Diamond. It is featured on his album Just for You. It is also on the CD Classics: The Early Years compilation and on the compilation album The Bang Years 1966 – 1968.

One song I have always loved is “Young Girl”. It is an RIAA million-selling Gold-certified single. The song was written by Jerry Fuller and recorded by the American pop-rock group Gary Puckett & the Union Gap. It was released in 1968 and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and went to number one on the UK Singles chart.

“You May Be Right” is a song that was written and performed by American singer, songwriter, and pianist Billy Joel. It was released as a single in 1980 and is featured on his album Glass Houses. This song is the first track from the album and begins with the sound of glass breaking.

This song always reminded me of a dear friend and I always enjoyed it when it came on the radio. “You’re Still the One” is a song that was written by Johanna Hall and John Hall, It was recorded by the American soft rock group Orleans and is featured on their 1976 album Waking and Dreaming. It charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

A lovely and uplifting song "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" was written by Gary Jackson, Raynard Miner, and Carl Smith. The R&B song was recorded in 1967 by American singer Jackie Wilson. It is featured on his album Higher and Higher. The song went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and also charted on the UK Singles chart. It is listed at number 246 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
