My Friend Juli Creates Brilliant Playlists. This Is One For The Holidays

That's Juli

Introduction

My friend Juli is a music lover, DJ, Poet, Writer, Performer, Snake Owner, and Cat Lover and publishes playlists on Facebook.

These twenty songs are all her choices, I have not heard any of them though I know a few of the bands so I will comment as I put this playlist together.

YouTube does not indicate where the videos are licensed to play so I try and choose the artist's or record label's channels in the hope they will be globally available.

A few of these are Bandcamp rather than YouTube links so you may have to sign up, but it is free and is good for artists. The Bandcamp links have the play button in the bottom left of the image whereas the YouTube ones are centre.

Take a listen and leave comments, I'd love to hear what you think.

Thanks for this Juli.

This was the last one:

The NAMES Playlist Mixtape

The Chameleons - "Nathan’s Phase" from "Dreams in Celluloid: A Collection of Rare Recordings"

Kicking off the playlist with machine gun guitar notes and snare drum, this, like I expect most of this playlist to be, is new to me. I know the band and this is an excellent opener.

"The Streets of London Paved With Lead"

Ritual Howls - "Rosabelle Believe" from "Ritual Howls"

Ritual Howls are new to me, thanks Juli, and this is driven by a quite monstrous bass line with a single wailing guitar note before the minimalist vocals begin to stab in. An excellent discovery for me.

Hannah Peel - "Chloe" from "Fabricstate"

An almost eastern repeated piano motif with vols that are in the same univers as Björk.

Cocteau Twins - "Hazel"

This is a lot more relentless that the stuff I am used to by the band, driven by a relentless snare and a single almost eBow guitar line, but no less excellent for it.

Jarvis Cocker - "Adam’s Nightmare" from "This Is Going To Hurt"

This is one I knew, having seen the excellent TV series and being a fan of Jarvis and Pulp.

Traitrs - "Magdalene"

Definite shades of The Cure and Dead Eyes Opened to excellent effect.

Ductape - "Gregor" from "Ruh"

More relentless driving brilliance, do I need to say anything more, just play this.

Gwendoline - "Spa Tranquille" from "Après c'est gobelet !"

Brooding and French, this is a band that Juli introduced me to via a previous playlist, and this is more Gwendoline excellence.

Boy Harsher - "Big Bad John"

A throbbing synth bassline with almost spoken enunciated vocals, which I was at first thinking was the Jimmy Dean song. It isn't.

The Crystals - "He Hit Me (It Felt Like a Kiss)"

A creepy, horrible record, but in my teenage years and even now I know girls who talked like this about abusive partners.

This becomes worse every time I hear it.

Queen Adreena - "Mary Magdalene" from "Ride A Cock Horse"

Another slice of relentlessness with some gentler bits woven in, my the main one note rhythm cuts you like a rusty saw.

Raw Moans - "Rose Bath" from "We Want It Beautiful Not Real"

Sort of a more vicious Cocteau Twins. Worth a listen and a free download from Bandcamp (or it was whn I wrote this).

French Police - "Stuart is Not So Little" from "Haunted Castle"

A snare / single guitar string drives this with space rock noises, that sounds like it has been recorded in an empty warehouse. more great sounds from Juli's mixtape.

Iggy Pop - "Billy is a Runaway" from "New Values"

Have a lot of records by James Jewel Osterburg, and have performed a lot with bands that I have played with, but this was one I hadn't heard. now I have.

New Model Army - "Dawn" from "High"

A rather excellent slice of New Model Armyism. I met Ed Alleyne-Johnson busking in Chester many years back and have a few of his albums. This was it:

Night In Athens - "Pale Rose" from "Wasted Reflektions"

This starts out in Tangerine Dream territory but then the needle rhythms kick in and we are on a completely different musical plane. Impressive.

The Dreams - "Better Dead Than Brian Adams"

This starts off full of almost jolly percussion but that is before they take a razor wire to the subject.

The Sugarcubes - "Regina"

This is just a slice of Icelandic magic. A true glacial beauty. Love the vocal duelling beween Björk and Einar.

Chelsea Wolfe - "Benjamin"

Sounding like a piano being played in the ballroom in a derelict Dickensian mansion. You are treated to this for ninety seconds before the broken ghostly vocals seep into the song.

Holygram - "Daria"

A fitting finale, maybe a little Bauhaus slowly steamrollering your mental facilities.

Conclusion

Thank you for reading and listening. Most of these songs are new to me but I have enjoyed evey song. I hope you found something that you like too.
