Juli Patchouli’s 'MAN IS THE ANIMAL' Mixtape Playlist

My Friend Juli Creates Brilliant Playlists. This Is The Second Of 2025

Introduction

My friend Juli is a music lover, DJ, Poet, Writer, Performer, Snake Owner, and Cat Lover and publishes playlists on Facebook.

These twenty songs are all her choices. I have not heard any of them, though I know a few of the bands, so I will comment as I put this playlist together.

YouTube does not indicate where the videos are licensed to play so I try and choose the artist's or record label's channels in the hope they will be globally available.

A few of these are Bandcamp rather than YouTube links, so you may have to sign up, but it is free and is good for artists. The Bandcamp links have the play button in the bottom left of the image, whereas the YouTube ones are centred.

Take a listen and leave comments, I'd love to hear what you think.

Thanks for this Juli.

This was the last one:

This is Juli's intro:

New animal-themed mixtape playlist (just one of many!)

10 out of 10 & a gold star if you spot the deliberate mistake & know why!

'MAN IS THE ANIMAL'

Red Lorry Yellow Lorry - "Monkey’s On Juice" from "Talk About the Weather"

From 1984, this made me think of Nick Cave and The Birthday Party. A great opening to this mixtape.

Molly Nilsson - "Bunny Club"

The electro intro to this lasts almost a minute and a half, and gives me a feel of early Depeche Mode or The Normal. Another goody.

Iham / Echo - "Eagle"

Doomily ghostly, very atmospheric. This is the Youtube description.

A one-off (?) We Be Echo/Dave Farmer collab; I dig the ghostly sub-ragga vibe of this one; make me want to dig out my Pocahaunted recs.

Suede - "Pantomime Horse" (Dog Man Star Tour Film)

Suede are a big band for this playlist, and as always, it fits in perfectly, although the album title is also perfect for the mixtape. This is magnificent.

Rozz Williams - "The Beast (Invocation)" from "Occult Box"

I think the image and the title prepare you for this. Mostrous and mystical, like you have landed in the valley of the lost. There's no music, just sound and the invocation. Does that allow it to be described as a song? Impressive.

QueenAdreena - "Wolverines" from "The Butcher And The Butterfly"

This vaguely reminds me of Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation, who you can find here. Electronic excellence.

Cage The Elephant - "Judas"

This is guitar-based rather than electronic and is from their eponymous album. A band I know of but haven't heard much of, but this has some great ascending guitar motifs.

Spell - "This Little Bird" from "Seasons In The Sun"

The first guitar note said Chris Isaak to me, and Rose's voice with the reverb continues the style. Absolute class. This is from the video:

Spell is a collaboration between Rose McDowall and Boyd Rice on which they pay homage to tragic love songs from the '60s and '70s.

Originally recorded and released in 1993, this one album they released, 'Seasons In The Sun', stands as a beautiful and timeless reinterpretation of these classic songs.

Rose McDowall was one half of the pop duo Strawberry Switchblade and Boyd Rice has been experimenting with sound since the mid '70s and stands tall as an innovator and pioneer of sound.

King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard - "Hot Wax" from "Oddments"

This sounds brilliantly monstrous, maybe having visited the same universe inhabited by the likes of The Birthday Party and The Cramps.

Converge and Chelsea Wolfe - "Scorpion's Sting" from "Bloodmoon"

A far doomier Chris Isaak/Link Wray vibe here and great slow burner.

Coil - "Blue Rats" from "A Guide for Beginners: The Voice of Silver / a Guide for Finishers: a Hair of Gold"

A darkly lurking piece of electronica keeps you unsure of what will happen next because it does not change. It has a strange relentlessness.

Pixies - "Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons" from "Trompe Le Monde"

A band I know well, and a great, brooding song. Love this.

Rat-Alarm - "Hostel Heart" from "Your Face Is Printed"

The first one I had to go to Bandcamp for. Vicious electronics from Denmark.

The Cure - "Shake Dog Shake" from "The Top"

Robert Smith bull no punches with this vicious monster. One of my favourite bands, of course.

Bird - "Blanks"

I'm unable to track this down, but I will add it when I find it.

Hanging Coffins - "Suburban Bison"

From their eponymous cassette-only album, so I couldn't find a digital copy anywhere. A bit Velvet Undergroundy, I couldn't find the song anywhere, so I included "Haunted Hives" so you know what they sound like.

Malaria! - "How Do You Like My New Dog?" from "Compiled 1981-1984"

Like a threatening post-punk Bertolt Brecht. Not pleasant, a bit ranty but worth a listen.

Freak Slug - "Spells"

This has an excellent strangeness, drum, guitar, noise and great vocals, though it gets heavier towards the conclusion.

Cocteau Twins - "Paper Tiger" from "Tiny Dynamite"

This is quite heavy for the Cocteaus, but a brilliant song nonetheless.

Coil - "Fire Of The Mind" from "The Ape Of Naples"

Less relentless than "Blue Rats", and I assume it fits in because of the album it is from. I wonder if that is Juli's deliberate mistake?

Thank you for reading, and I hope you found something that you enjoyed here. I did.

What a nice mix of music <3

  • As you know, it's not my style of music, though it does provide for an interesting study. I agree with you on which is the deliberate mistake, inasmuch as it's the only one where the "animal" is named in the album rather than either the song or group. Alternatively, I would ask whether any of them were actually about the named animal rather than describing people as such animals. (No, I did not listen closely enough to make such a determination. I already suffer from migraines as it is, lol.) Most, but not all, did play for me. (I read Tom Baker's final installment of "Metropolis" while listening to the playlist. They went together quite aptly.)
