Some of the best songs of the disco era

By Rasma RaistersPublished about a year ago 3 min read

A popular genre of music popped up in the 1970s and early 1980s. People began tapping their feet as disco songs were known for their captivating lyrics and catchy beats. Some of the songs seemed to go on forever but once you were out there on the disco floor and that disco ball was throwing off colorful rainbows it really did not matter. The disco era is long gone but the songs remain and some of the best deserve to be heard even today. So pick your favorites.

Disco is a combination of various elements like soul, funk, gospel, and electronic music. Let’s take a musical journey through the disco era. You’ll find the link to Part 1 below.

“Give Me the Night” is a disco hit that came out in 1980. It was written by Heatwave’s keyboard player Rod Temperton. The song was recorded by the American jazz and R&B musician George Benson and is featured on his 1980 album of the same name. It became Benson’s first single to reach number one on the Billboard Souls Singles chart. The song also charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Hot Disco Singles charts.

“I’m in the Mood for Dancing” is a song that was recorded by the Irish pop group The Nolan Sisters later becoming The Nolans. It was written by Ben Frindon, Mike Myers, and Bob Puzey and features the lead vocals of Bernie Nolan. The single was released in 1979 and became a top-three hit in the UK. It is a blend of pop and disco and remains the group’s biggest hit. The single was certified Gold by the BPI.

“Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe” is a song that was written and recorded by the American musician Barry White. The song was released as the first single from his 1974 album Can’t Get Enough. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard R&B charts. It became one of White’s signature tunes. White performed the song live on two TV shows The Midnight Special and Soul Train.

“Magic Fly” is a song that was recorded by the French band Space. It is featured on their 1976 debut album of the same name, The album charted on the UK Albums chart and the single on the UK Singles chart. A version of the title track was used as the main theme of the original Chinese version of the 1978 movie “Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow” by Jackie Chan.

“Night Fever” is a song that was written and recorded by the English-Australian pop-rock band The Bee Gees. The song was featured on the soundtrack of the movie “Saturday Night Fever”. The song charted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It became a popular disco hit.

“The Hustle” is a disco song that was written and recorded by the American singer and songwriter Van McCoy and the Soul City Symphony. The song went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Soul Singles charts. It also won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in 1976. Making an album in NYC McCoy composed the song after he and his music partner Charles Kipps watched people do a dance called The Hustle in the nightclub Adam’s Apple. During the hot and steamy summer of 1975 people were in discos doing The Hustle.

“Fly, Robin, Fly” is a song that was recorded by the German disco group Silver Convention. It is featured on their 1975 album Save Me. The song was written by Sylvester Levay and Stephan Prager. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and won the Grammy for Best R&B Instrumental Performance.

“Rock the Boat” is a song that was recorded by the American trio The Hues Corporation. It was written by Wally Holmes and is featured on their 1973 album Freedom for the Stallion. The song quickly became a disco hit. Some say that the song had the honor of being the first disco song to rise to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was awarded a Gold record.

“Le Freak” is a funk-disco song that was recorded by the American R&B band Chic. It became their first number-one hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. The song also charted on the UK Singles chart and everyone loved it on the disco floor.

I have to finish this disco series with one of my top favorites to dance to beneath the disco ball.

“MacArthur Park” is a song that was written by the American singer and songwriter Jimmy Webb. Originally it was recorded in 1967 by Irish actor and singer Richard Harris. In 1978 the American singer Donna Summer made the song into a multi-million selling vinyl single disco version. The song went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Some excellent music is highlighted in this piece! I survived all the strobe lights, platform shoes, jumpsuits, and polyester from the Disco age and moved on, but I still love some good Disco music.
