Calgary, AB/Los Angeles, CA-based newcomer Ev. G makes a striking debut with And Then I Go Up – a bold, atmospheric, and deeply introspective album that navigates identity, inner contradictions, and the quiet transformations that define us. Pulling from literary musings, mythological lore, and his own existential investigations, Ev brings a unique voice and perspective to some universal curiosities, crafting a sound that is at once expansive and intimate.
Recorded over several years across multiple iconic spaces – including Sound City (Los Angeles), Studio B in Calgary, Tall Pines (Temagami), and Will Maclellan’s Pasadena studio – And Then I Go Up evolved through collaboration with producers Brock Geiger and Maclellan. Their willingness to experiment provides a varied, rich sonic palette from start to finish, allowing the record to move fluidly between genres and moods.
“Anytime Brock, Will, and I were in a room together, it just felt like a good hang,” says Ev. “Making the album over time in different settings allowed us to approach with fresh ears and figure out what the songs needed which resulted in each one undergoing some major revisions. Those were some of my favourite parts of the whole process – taking something I’d grown used to hearing a certain way, then reimagining it to serve the song in the best way we could.”
At the heart of the record is its lead single “Allure” – one of the earliest tracks written after Ev returned to music following a long break. Built on a hook preserved from the original voice-memo demo, the track meditates on the contradictory feelings of moving through life’s seasons and the grip of nostalgia.
“Then all of a sudden you see that invisible undercurrent of longing for what it is. And the allure is gone,” says Ev. “Now you can just gaze back on that season with fondness.”
And Then I Go Up features a stacked crew of musical contributors who bring further depth and texture to Ev’s vision. Bass duties are handled by Gabe Noel (Youth Lagoon, Father John Misty, Kendrick Lamar), while Ethan Gruska (Bon Iver, Phoebe Bridgers) contributes synth and atmospheric textures. Drums come from Kane Ritchotte (HAIM, Portugal. The Man), and keys/synth are provided by Benny Bock (Lucy Dacus, Orville Peck). These collaborators help Ev lean into the album’s dualities – alt-hip-hop and chill indie grooves, lyrical world-building, ambiguity balanced with specificity – producing a record that moves through reflective highs and lows while leaving room for listeners to discover their own meaning.
“It was important to me to keep some level of ambiguity across the project,” says Ev. “One of the main ideas I wanted to explore relates to our inner experience that’s hidden from the outside world. Deep down, I think we all have a primal need to feel understood and form meaningful connections. Those needs feel almost inseparable from each other, but they’re not quite the same. Do they ever oppose each other? Where would that leave you?”
The album’s sonic palette is as dynamic as its lyrical explorations, transitioning from brooding, introspective passages to moments of ethereal uplift. Ev’s literary and mythological inspirations permeate the music, creating an experience that feels cinematic, personal, and deeply immersive. Each track is meticulously layered, allowing Ev’s voice, his collaborators’ contributions, and the production choices to coalesce into a compelling, cohesive journey.
With And Then I Go Up, Ev. G doesn’t just introduce himself as an artist to watch – he creates a sonic world all his own. The album asks more questions than it answers, probing the spaces between longing and contentment, individuality and connection, memory and presence. It is a debut that resonates in its honesty, offering listeners an invitation to reflect on their own inner landscapes while experiencing the deft musicality of a fresh, bold artist.
