A New Wave Tarot Playlist #1

Eight Slices Of Suberb Music From One Of My Tarot Decks

The Cards Drawn From The New Wave Tarot Deck

Introduction

I always thought that the phrase New Wave was a dilution of the Punk ethic to make it more palatable for market consumption. Sort of when they learned to play they weren't punk anymore but they were New Wave. C’est La Vie

This is quite a simple idea, I have a New Wave Tarot deck and it is quite beautiful. There is a link below.

I chose eight cards and each artist gets a song on this playlist, I will also include the cards I drew.

This may be the first of the series and I am hoping that the cards I have drawn will inspire a #Tarotale for me too.

So here is that list.

Siouxsie Sue

1: The High Priestess - Siouxsie Sue / Siouxsie and the Banshees: Song - "Face To Face"

I always loved Siouxsie and the Banshees straight from the off, and my daughters Juliet and Kirsty loved the song "Face To Face" from the film "Batman Returns" co-composed with Daniel Elfman and loved the stunning creepy video.

Morrisey

2: Temperance - Morrisey: Song - "Ouija Board,Ouija Board"

While I am not sure that Morrisey is the finest example of "Temperance" this song fits in with the general gothic atmosphere of this playlist.

Cyndi Lauper

3: Page of Swords - Cyndi Lauper: Song - "Sisters of Avalon"

Cyndi Lauper has done so much that is anything but run of the mill and this is one of those songs, I used this as an inspiration for one of my poems which you can search out on my Vocal poetry thread if you are so inclined.

Boy George / Culture Club

4: Ten of Disks - Culture Club: Song - "Church of the Poison Mind"

I sort of liked culture Club ever since a work colleague said "that girl singer they have is really ugly", and I have been a fan of Boy George ever since. Love how their image challenged the mainstream while creating pop songs that the mainstream loved until they saw who was singing, but by then they had bought the record, so the job was done.

I have chosen my favourite Culture Clun song for this playlist.

The Human League

5: Six of Cups - Human League: Song - "Being Boiled"

This was before they hit it really big, but is still my favourite song of theirs, incredibly vicious and was used as an encore when Heave 17 played at the Mouth of Tyne Festival in 2012. My video is below.

Mary Poole and Her Husband Robert Smith

6: The Lovers - Mary Poole and Robert Smith of The Cure: Song - "Catch"

One of my favourite Cure love songs. It reminds me of a girl I knew in Bradford called Frances. We shared a love of the Cure.

The Go-Gos

7: Ten Of Wands - The Go-Gos: Song - "Our Lips Are Sealed"

Co-written by Terry Hall of The Fun Boy Three and Jane Weidling of The Go-Gos , the first version I heard was by The Fun Boy Three, but the song is great and I love both takes on this.

The Creatures:Siouxsie and Budgie

8: Two of Cups - The Creatures: Song - "Right Now"

The Creatures were formed in 1981 by Siouxsie Sioux and drummer Budgie of the group Siouxsie and the Banshees.

They released their first EP Wild Things in 1981 and recorded four studio albums:

  • Feast in 1983,
  • Boomerang in 1989,
  • Anima Animus in 1999
  • Hái! in 2003.

Conclusion

This is probably the first of many of these playlists. Although this one consists of music loosely termed as New Wave, others may use the same deck or one of my other decks. I published some images of my packs on Instagram here.
