Does overeating cause obesity? Or… Does the process of gaining weight CAUSE the overeating?
Obesity is an ongoing pandemic. According to the latest WHO Global Health Observatory data, collated in 2016, more than 1·9 billion adults were overweight, with 650 million of these individuals being obese. The global prevalence of obesity nearly tripled between 1975 and 2016, with substantial rises in most countries. As such, the global spread of obesity has been labelled a pandemic, albeit one with a slower onset of cases and detrimental effects than the 2009 H1N1 pandemic or the COVID-19 pandemic.

Back in early December of 2020 I read an article published in the British medical journal - Malnutrition: the silent pandemic. As someone who is incredibly curious about the food we eat and its long term effects on our health, this article really made me think! Like, really made me think. I mean, we're all living through this really weird time right?. We've got a virus floating about around us, we wash our hand 18 times a day, wear a mask, we watch the news (next slide please *said Chris Witty) to stay updated on 'new variants', and some of us have even bought books on epidemiology. We've all been so proactive and diligent against protecting ourselves and others. Go us!

Once upon a time, we humans ate food to sustain ourselves. You see, we are pretty amazing. We have sophisticated systems to enable us to perform our most essential task; find food for fuel. Our taste abilities have been shaped by the ecological niches our evolutionary ancestors occupied and by the nutrients they sought. They helped us to identify nutrients to survive.

5 Things I'd Tell My 18-Year-Old Self
1. Take your fu*king time! I was one of the millions of kids at the age of 18 that decided to take herself off to university. I nailed my A-Levels and spent months researching and picking a university course. I was told by everyone that if I wanted a good job, then this was what I needed to do. The problem was, I knew all along that it didn’t quite feel like the right time to go. I wasn’t entirely convinced that the career path I’d chosen was for me. Here I was at 18-years-old, trying to convince myself that teaching was for me based on four A-levels!!!!!!
