Fitness is a part of all our lives and whether you are training for a marathon or going on evening walks, we each have our own unique relationship with fitness. The same is true for wellness, but the two are frequently confused as being one and the same. When we see someone who is healthy and in good shape, we assume that this person has wellness; however, this isn’t always the case. I have spoken with former bodybuilders and athletes who now have multiple physical injuries and mental strains years later. Even though these individuals achieved incredible fitness goals, they never prioritized their wellness.

There have been countless times where someone has asked me about a book I have read in the past, and I was only able to remember a couple of the major points. With the internet and TV, it's no wonder we have such a tough time retaining what we've read months ago as our brains are constantly being flooded with new information. There is hope, however, as there are tips and tricks we can use to better remember what we've read; the best reading retention techniques are: eliminating distractions, listening to instrumentals, annotating key points, summarizing what you've read, and allotting specific times for reading.

I Gave Up Social Media for 30 Days
Whether we are aware of it or not, social media has become a key component of our lives. It fills the gaps in activity throughout the workday and multiple hours in the evenings; the typical American spends an average of 123 minutes, or 2 hours and 3 minutes, on social media sites per day. This statistic is astounding because so many people, myself included, complain of not having enough free time during the week. Think about it, if we cut out social media, we would gain an average of 861 minutes of free time per week. It was upon realizing this that I resolved to cut social media out of my life for 30 days. The results were surprising and amazing as I was better focused, more grateful, and more connected to myself and my surroundings.

Having a Morning and Bedtime Routine Changed My Life
I am by no stretch of the imagination a morning person; waking up and getting going was always the hardest part of my day. While wellness presents itself in many forms, we have identified the 8 fundamental areas of wellness as being: Physical, Intellectual, Professional, Social, Financial, Spiritual, Romantic, and Creative. These areas may seem independent but they are intersectional and often affect each other; if you are neglecting a certain area, then there’s a good chance it will negatively impact another area. Now that we’ve established the 8 areas, let’s take a closer look at each one individually.

The Dualistic Nature of Wellness Leaks
Our awareness of the areas of wellness is essential to finding fulfillment in our lives. Lack of awareness is nothing more than neglecting responsibility from a certain area or areas of wellness. This can appear in a variety of forms. It can show up financially by not checking our bank accounts because we are afraid of what we might find. It may emerge physically by not stepping on the scale or going to the doctor, because we are afraid to know what we feel is true. This awareness can even apply to spirituality by not checking in with ourselves or asking what deepest desires are. This is often because we are afraid of what we must do when we discover them.

Reimagining My Resolutions for 2021
In past years, my resolutions have been aimed towards vague self-improvement over the coming year. They took the forms of various goals such as “workout 3 times a week”, “get a promotion at work”, and “read 1 book a month”. I felt that if I achieved them, I would be fulfilled; however, I would instead be left disappointed by the lack of satisfaction upon completion. These goals would also cause me to have a “what’s next” mentality in which I was anxiously preoccupied with what I had to do following my current action to accomplish my goals. It was upon realizing this that I decided to switch things up for my resolutions this year; instead of choosing distant goals, I am focusing on intentions that can guide me in my journey. I was able to do this by practicing a self-reflective “seeing” exercise and shifting my mindset about pursuing goals.
