The Gray Man review: Jason Bourne 'with an identity crisis'
ames Bond is out of action, Jason Bourne hasn't been seen since 2016, and, now that Tom Cruise has turned 60, it can't be long before his Mission: Impossible missions really are impossible. This, then, could be the ideal moment for a new cinematic secret agent – and The Gray Man seems to be the man for the job. The film is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who made the last two Avengers instalments, and it's adapted from the first in a series of best-selling novels by Mark Greaney. It's also got a £170 million budget – the biggest ever for a Netflix production, apparently – and it's got Ryan Gosling in the lead role alongside Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. Everything is in its favour. So how come The Gray Man is such an un-thrilling thriller?

Four stars for Dune
First there was David Lynch's Dune, a turkey remembered principally for putting Sting in a nappy, and stopping Showgirls being the nadir of Kyle MacLachlan's career. Then came the television mini-series in 2000, which had the running time but not the budget to do Frank Herbert's beloved novel justice. And of course, there was Alejandro Jodorowsky's surreal vision, which was famously never made. Now at last we have what should, in theory, be the definitive Dune film, a mega-budget epic with cutting-edge visual effects, an A-list cast and crew, and a director, Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049), who has dreamt of adapting the book for decades. Can he succeed where others (well, David Lynch and Jodorowsky) failed?

here is a scale to Denis Villeneuve's Dune that borders on the biblical. Monolithic spaceships hang like moons in the heavens. Worms the size of skyscrapers swim like sharks through the desert. Extreme wide shots frame the barren planet of Arrakis as a vast unknowable ocean of sand, its dunes fluttering in the wind like waves. And yet it is not only size that makes Dune one of the most striking science-fiction films of recent years. It is how it marries that grandeur with slow, atmospheric and considered filmmaking – where shots live long, and scenes breathe freely.

Resurrecting the mammoth?
The first Russian laboratory for cloning extinct animals has started work in Yakutsk, Russian media reported on September 1. The first task of the researchers is to "enable the regeneration of mammoths". The project brings together scholars from Russia, China and South Korea. South Korean geneticist Hwang U-seok, who is involved in the project, said that if the complete genome is found, they hope to clone the mammoth within a few decades. Can the extinct mammoth really be revived?
