DIRTY SKY
Today was the first quiet day in months. I looked out the window, or what’s left of it. I could hardly see through the dirty glass. Trying to wipe it clean with my sleeve, I scratched it with the locket I was holding in my hand. I forgot that I was clenching it in my fist. I’ve been doing that for days. A heart-shaped locket. The only thing left from my past life. I went to look for my dog, who I haven’t seen since yesterday. He was probably hiding somewhere. I hoped.

To My Future
I am on my way. Almost. I still have a few things to pack, but perhaps I shouldn’t take much with me. Or nothing at all maybe. It’s just, I don’t know how to embark on this journey with no luggage. I won’t keep you waiting for much longer. I promise. I cannot come empty handed, that’s just bad manners. And so, let me at least bring a good attitude, and maybe some gratitude too. I’ll wrap them nicely in a rosy tissue paper. Like a gift. Except, it’s not a gift for you, my future. It’s for me. But I will share it with you.

To My Present
While I have you here, because I know you won’t be staying much longer. Let me say what’s on my mind. Our past brought us together. You should know that I have now abandoned our past. But don’t worry, this does not mean that we won’t meet again. We most certainly will, but under different circumstances. Better, for me and you. But before this can happen, I do have a favor to ask. Sever all ties with the past, my dear present. This is not vicious or cruel. This is simply, natural and right. Would you please? Kindly? Grant me this favor?

To My Past
We’ve known each other my whole life. Me and you, my past. You have been a great companion. Most of the time. You did your best to keep us safe and sane. Most of the time. You have led me through some tough times and held my hand. You were there for me, when I needed you. You were also there when I didn’t want you. Always. The time has come for us to part our ways. You can stay where you are, in the past. And I. I will take a different turn and go towards the future. I will look ahead, and ahead only. I will miss you, but I am not coming back. I am not turning back.

Dream House
Entering this house feels familiar. I know it well. The damp and cold smell goes through me like a ghost. It’s dark and empty, on the side of a road. Far away from everyone and everything. A lonely old cube with neglected gardens all around. I can see it from the inside. It looks sad and I recognise this sadness. Suddenly, I see people outside. With guns. I think they are snipers. They’re here for me. But I know how to escape. Through the basement, out the small window at the bottom of the back wall. They will never see me leave. I run up the hill near the house. I see more snipers. And a woman, wearing a navy-blue trench coat, talking to them. She’s in charge. I run past them. They don’t see me. I stop, surprised. I am right next to them. They keep watching the house. I turn around to look at it too.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SHOES
I was getting ready for my prom. I was running late, and my hair was a mess. Split in the middle and so flat, that my ears were sticking out. With big curls on ends. I got to the venue. I looked down and I was wearing two different shoes. I was at work. About to leave. It was raining outside. I had wellies on. They disappeared. I found myself standing by the front door in my socks. They were soaking wet. I remembered I had another pair of shoes in my bag. They were my summery raffia sneakers. I took my wet socks off and put the shoes on.
