I am 70, retired, and going back to my early days of writing. I look forward to publishing more stories on Vocal and sharing my life lessons with the world.

Barbeque and Burning Tires
The year was 1965. I was 15 and this was going to be my last summer working for Daddy Fox. I was just finishing 8th grade and starting high school in the fall. I had landed a job working after school and in the summers at a local fast-food joint called Burger Chef. It is long gone now but in the 60s was a strong competitor to McDonald's.

The year was 1964. After what happened to Queenie, I was hesitant to go back the next summer to work for Daddy Fox at the gas station. But in the end, I decided that there were still good times to be had and the money was also a consideration as I could make enough in the summer to carry me for many months into the school year.

The Great Missing Teeth Mystery
The year was 1963. This was my first summer working for my grandfather at his gas station in Guthrie Kentucky. I had been settling in and had a good routine going into the 3rd week of June. I was comfortable with my duties at the station and was happy to be making good money for the summer. Daddy Fox paid in cash on Fridays and I loved folding those bills and stuffing them into my pocket each week.

Daddy Fox and Devil's Elbow
Daddy Fox - 1962 The call came at about midnight. I was still awake because it was Friday night and I knew that Dad would be in my room soon enough. It was his habit to start drinking as soon as he got home from work. Scotch was the drink and he could well afford it as he held a high office in state government and made excellent money for the time. I would go to bed about 11:00 and pretend to be asleep, dreading the bedroom door opening and my dad shaking me to wake up. He would turn back toward the living room knowing that I would follow and take my place in the overstuffed chair next to the couch. I was expected to just listen to his drunken rambling, nod my head and not comment…and then the phone rang. Dad took the call in the kitchen which was right off the living room.

"Queenie"
The year was 1963. I spent 3 summers working for Daddy Fox in the gas station at the intersection of Highway 41 and 79 in Guthrie, Ky. The location was perfect as both highways moved a lot of traffic and there were plenty of cars and trucks that stopped just for gas. Guthrie was a small town and there was local trade; mostly farmers, town folks and workers from the Purina Pet Food plant. The intersection of both highways created a V-shaped lot that was huge and contained the gas station, a small house, and a modest motel toward the back end of the lot as it widened out.
