Ivan the Terrible
One day my lovely silky bantam hens were innocently feeding on breakfast crumbs when Ivan appeared. The sky darkened. Ivan the Terrible, our one and only rooster, thought he owned the world. I mean, look at the sky. The biggest hen turned toward him, clucked, and gave him her best stink eye. She scratched the crumbs, flinging them toward him, hitting him square on his cockscomb. His evil right eye flashed but he paused, ruffled his tail feathers and fled.

Zucchini
Zucchini - Summer’s Signature Dish What is it about summer squash? Is it the beautiful flowers it produces? It is probable that the design of the squash blossom necklace came from the huge yellow flowers of the squash plant that Native Americans relied on in the Southwest. When the first squash blossom appears in the garden, it is always a delight to behold. Bees swoop in and out drinking nectar and I wonder what squash honey taste like. Or is it the prolific production of a fruit that can be used in endless recipes, both sweet or savory?

Owl Dreams
Owl Dreams In the summer of 1972, my boyfriend and I moved in together. I wasn't planning on it, but I saw an ad for a furnished lease house for rent. I was a college student and ready to move out of my parent's home. I called the number from the ad and an elderly woman answered. She asked me to come to her home and meet her . When my boyfriend and I arrived, we noted her neat brick home in a well-to-do neighborhood. The woman introduced herself as Roberta and welcomed us into her air-conditioned living room. I gave her a list of references and petted her large white cat. We sat down in her living room filled with curios. We felt so grown-up though we were barely 19 years old.

The Rooster
The Rooster My Desperate Happiness February 2020. My Doodle Doo Rooster pattern was mesmerizing. I was sitting in a creative applique quilt class. My first. He looked so flamboyant on the package. Feathers flew off and away from him as if he were strutting through a strong headwind. This was not just any ordinary rooster. He had a quirky comedic attitude. He was so irresistible that I bought the overpriced pattern kit among many other choices and signed up for the applique class I was now sitting in. I had gone on a wild shopping spree buying lots of colorful fabric to go with some material that I had bought in Kauai in 2018. I adored Hawaiian prints and had sewed and quilted my first and only miniature wall hanging of Hanalei Bay in 2019. The little Hawaiian quilt hung on my bedroom wall greeting me every morning. I visualized my rooster hanging in my office/craft room also welcoming me to a new and bright day.
