Why you shouldn't read my book
In author spaces, there’s a lot of focus on shilling for your book, understandably so. Wanting people to read our stories is a usual requisite for all the painstaking time we spend writing them down, and for many of us, readers and sales folds into being big parts of our livelihoods. My YA SFF debut, Alvoskia: Call of the Infrans, is out March 2026, pitched as queer gothic Avatar: The Last Airbender meets Six of Crows and Percy Jackson, is very much something I want people to read. Evident by my synopsis, it’s a story I’ve poured my heart and soul into:

The Biggest Mistake Writers Make
So often, stories trip themselves up when they focus too much on what's running through the mind of their audience. A perfect example of this is the structurally unsound Star Wars sequel trilogy. Regardless of which one was your favourite, if you liked any of them, the lack of a clear outline is obvious even to a more casual viewer. While the trilogy's conclusion, The Rise of Skywalker, loses stakes to fanservice, and so can The Force Awakens, the heart of the issue is unfortunately at The Last Jedi.

Why Spider Riders Is Worth Your Time
If you were a Canadian kid in the mid-2000s, you might have seen a commercial, or even episodes, of a show called Spider Riders. A Canadian-Japanese anime, the show followed ordinary boy Hunter Steele (yes, it is the most protagonist-y name ever) falling into the Inner World, discovering a people at war with the evil insect-based Invectids, and giant battle spiders that partnered with brave heroes to defend Arachna from its foes. It seems, at first glance, generic if not downright silly.

Legend of Korra, In Retrospect
Back in the day, I was in the Legend of Korra (LOK) fandom. I watched Book One when it came out in 2012 and liked it. I fell off the wagon sometime in mid to late Book Two and took a while before getting back on; I've always been a big believer that add-ons to a canon of something beloved are entirely optional. Even if I thought LOK, at that point, was only okay, nothing could mar my undying love for the original Avatar: The Last Airbender as my favourite show of all time. I missed the long hiatus between seasons and saw the first three episodes of Book Three: Change on Youtube, watching it on a whim on a friend's house.

How Recent Love Triangles Reinforce Racism
Love triangles have long been a staple in the YA drama. From TV shows, movies, and books, they're a common source of drama (particularly in sequels, for some reason). In the past seven years, there's been a big push to also diversify the love interests seen on screen, with more men of colour in particular joining the fray, which can only be a good thing. (Even if women of colour deserve more opportunities, too.)

La La Land Review
Almost seven years to the party, I finally sat down and watched La La Land, a romantic-musical dramedy released in 2016 starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as two struggling artists in LA who fall in love while chasing their dreams. I'd heard good things about it, I like movie musicals and musicals in general, and I am trying to make a career in the arts (and am also in a longterm relationship with another artist). I was primed, for the most part, to like this movie.

How Fandom Gave Me A Safe Space for My Autism
I got into fandom when I was 11 years old. If not a little younger, since it was back in 2011, and I'd been doing fandom-y things my whole life. Notebooks from when I was four and five had very poorly but lovingly drawn fanart in them, and I'd made up stories about characters that weren't my own my whole life — and even some that were.

The real world is full of implications. One of the trickiest things about building a fantasy world from scratch is making it feel real. And one of the biggest let downs is when a series or TV show that, for most of its run, tried to feel grounded in some way, has suddenly tossed any continuity out the window.

The Owl House's One Problem
The Owl House, created by Dana Terrace and released by Disney in January 2020, is a fantastic tv show. It stars Luz Nocedo, a quirky AfroLatine teenager, who stumbles through a door and into the magical, creepy world of the Boiling Isles, full of demon and witches. From there she befriends criminal outlaw Eda the Owl Lady and a tiny demon named King. She goes to school, makes friends for the first time in her life, and even falls for and begins a romantic relationship with another girl, rival bully turned friend and love interest, Amity Blight.

How Encanto Fails Mirabel. Top Story - January 2022.
Encanto is not a bad movie. Gorgeously animated with a roster of catchy songs and fascinating family members, it's one of the most interesting and meaningful Disney movies to come out in a long time. I am also not going to sit here on a high horse and say that anyone in the movie is a villain (they're not), or that liking it is bad (it isn't), or that you can't have zero qualms with it (that's perfectly fine).
