Photographing Like a Tourist in My Home City
I think I’ve told the story of how I started photographing before. It was taking photos of people ducking for cover under St George’s Walk, Croydon, and of interesting front doors and fence panels that I walked past. That’s how I learned the ins and outs of my camera, anyway. Not long after, documenting my surroundings became a distant habit.

Can You Take Good Photos on an iPhone?
Maybe it's because it's not it's primary function, or maybe it's because everyone has one but not everyone knows how to use it, but often a smart phone is disregarded for it's potential as anything other than a tool to start connected with. Surely a phone camera can't be a serious piece of technology that rivals industry standards when the vast majority of people end up with blurry photos and poor compositions.

Shooting with Constant Lights on Location
It’s that time of year again when the days are shorter and the nights are longer. Autumn, for me, signifies a time to slow down and to work on projects that I want to work on. For the last couple of years, my favourite personal shoots have usually been shot September through to November but, when I first started in photography, I would dread this time of year. Most of my work was on location and so I was having to cram shoots into the few hours of daylight we had and just hoping that it didn’t rain.

Another Year of Writings and Ramblings
Truly understanding who I am as an artist is something that I’ve always struggled with. The nature of being a creative is that I dabble across the creative arts but the nature of society is that we're encouraged to stick to one thing, to have a clear identifier. We’re expected to label ourselves, to put ourselves into a box that makes it easier for other people to make sense of us, but as an artist, it can be difficult to understand and define the parameters in which you work because exploration, experimentation and fluidity are so instrumental in what it is that we do, so much so that those parameters don’t really exist at all.

Using a Continuous Light for Photography. Top Story - January 2024.
Studio photography is something that I struggled with for the first part of my career. It can be difficult to learn how to shape lights when you don't have access to them or to the spaces to use them, but one of the things that I've found over the years of working as a photographer is that this problem can be simplified when you realise that you can achieve a lot with just one light. Further, using continuous lights, as we will do in this shoot, can be a great way to get to grips with shaping lighting in a way that feels more natural and much easier than using strobes.

How I Turned Photography into a Career
Like a lot of photographers will probably be able to say, photography has been a big part of my life since I was a kid. But from playing around with my parent's cameras, to finally being able to call myself a full-time, professional photographer, there have been a lot of steps in between.
