My Life after the little black book
I am writing to anyone who will read this and make better decisions than I ever did. It all started one day at my workplace which was a convenient store just three blocks from my house. I was working the late shift to make a little extra money so I could make rent for the month, it was a normal slow night with not that much happening, as I sat behind the counter doodling on the back of a receipt a man burst in “You got to help me, I've been shot!” he screamed I quickly ran to the phone we had and began calling 911 “No, don't call the police they know about me they will kill me too” I was struck dumb at the moment I didn't know what to do. “Look I don't know how long I've got to live, take this and destroy it any way you can.” he said handing me a small black book. “Let me get you to a hospital,” I told him “ My car is out front”. “ I don't have time, just make sure no one knows you have the book before you can destroy it or they will come after you.” as he said this he collapsed to the floor. I tried to pick him up but he was dead, what the hell was I going to do there was a dead man in my shop, I had to call the police or else it would look bad for me, but not before I erased the footage of everything on the security cameras no one would be suspicious since we always had problems with our cams, so I locked up shop deleted all the footage and then called the police. They got to the shop so fast like they had been just around the corner so it scared me a little. “Hello, I'm Officer Rose and this is Officer Andrews, What’s your name?” they asked me “ My name is Brandon Dune, Officer” I said shaking from fear and cold since it was the middle of November “Ok, now Brandon I know it's been traumatic for you tonight but I need you to tell me everything that happened, even details that you think are useless.” so I told them an amended version of events leaving out anything about the book and what exactly the guy had told me when I finished they looked at me and began questioning my version of events “So what time did you say this was.” “This was around 10:30 pm Officer” I had watched enough tv detective shows to know I only answer questions they ask me and never to give out more info than they had asked. After questioning me for like twenty minutes I said“Officer, I don't want to be rude but I'm very tired do you think I can go home now?.” He looked like he was angry but forced himself to smile and said “Of course you can, but one last thing do you have any surveillance cameras in the shop?” Officer Rose asked me “Yes we do but I can't permit you to look at them my boss will have to allow you” “Ok you just give us his number and we will call him” so I gave them his number and then got in my car and drove off. I had never been happier to be in my run down car than at that moment as soon as I got home I picked up my backpack and ran into my house and locked all the doors and windows and then double-checked them twice for good measure. I then went into my kitchen and finally pulled out the little black book the guy in the shop had probably been killed for, for a whole ten minutes I just stared at the book wondering if I should let my curiosity get the best of me or if I should destroy it as it was the last words of the now-dead man. I told myself I'll look then destroy it, I opened a page at random and began to read it's contents. How was this possible, how could all this be true? it had events that had not yet happened from sports games to Award winners to invention I had never heard of. I closed the book more confused and scared than before I opened it. Was the guy in the shop from the future, it sounded crazy but that was the only logical explanation for the book and all the information in it. I had to see if this was true I looked inside the book again and located tomorrows date and saw there would be a football match tomorrow maybe it was a crazy guy who liked to make wild predictions, but everything was so detailed from who would score, at what time and all the fouls, and most importantly who would win and what the last the score would be. The next day I woke up to knocking at my door, I just managed to wake myself up as I heard a third knock at my door. It was the Officers from the night before. “Good morning, Mr Dune we hate to wake you up but as you know we are dealing with a possible homicide, do you mind if we come in?” I stepped to the side and gestured for them to come in “Could I offer you some coffee Officers?” I asked them. “No, that will be okay, we would just like to know if you might remember anything else you may have failed or forgotten to add last night once again even the smallest or what you might think to be useless piece of information could help us”. I walked over into my kitchen and said “No, Officer, there is nothing else I can remember only what I told you last night”. I told them pouring myself a cup of coffee “ Are you sure Mr Dune?” “Yes Officer quite sure” “ Then we will be on our way, here is my number should you remember anything at all.” I collected his card and escorted them to the door as they were leaving Officer Rose turned to me and said, “ I'm not saying you are but if you are keeping anything from us it's best you don't, we will find out in the end.” I said nothing but nodded “ Have a good day Mr Dune” he said as I closed the door. At this point I was scared shitless maybe it was best I destroy the book right now. I quickly retrieved it from it's hiding place beneath my bedroom floorboards and lit a match a tried to burn it “What the fuck!” I couldn't help saying out loud it wouldn't burn I lit another twenty matches still nothing, maybe the flame was too small so I lit my cooker and put it on there, you had got to be kidding it didn't even have smoke coming off of it. No, this thing had to made of some crazy material. Just as I was planning to damage the pages with a knife I was startled by my phone alarm ringing, reminding me of the match, my curiosity took over from my fear and I switched on my television, my mind went into a freefall everything the book said would happen happened down to the final score. Clearly, people knew about the book and it might not take them long to find out where it was, but if everything in the book was true then I had in my hands the power to predict every future event, Oh my gosh I could make all the money I wanted as well, it had every match that would ever be played even if I would destroy the book in the end, there was no reason I couldn't have a little fun for a few days. What was supposed to be a few days became months, plus the case of the man who died in a convenient shop soon went cold, and I was now a substantially rich man seemingly overnight. I had won two lotteries but I always made sure it wasn't the grand prize so I could remain low key, I had also correctly predicted a few football games and been able to win a beautiful and wonderful girlfriend called Lauren due to being incredibly knowledgable about many world events. Life for me was sweet I could go on holidays whenever I wanted to buy myself the latest anything and treat Lauren to every luxury the world had to offer, but I should have known that everything would soon come crashing down. One afternoon just before I was set to fly to Australia for a two-week getaway where I would propose to Lauren there was a knock at my door now I had been playing music in the garden but I had heard the faint knocking on my door and was making my way slowly to open it before I could get to it, my door was booted open and a sea of men in all black S.W.A.T like uniform flooded my home and grabbed me, blindfolded me and threw me into a back of a vehicle. “Please where are you taking me?, Where is my girlfriend?, Please tell me something?, despite all my questions nothing was said to me until finally the vehicle finally stopped moving after what felt like hours. “Hello, Mr Dune I'm so glad you could join us”, I knew that voice before they even took my blindfold off it was Officer Rose. “I was nice to you and gave you so much time to confess to having the book, so now make this nice and easy and give me the book and I’ll let you and your girlfriend go”. If he knew about the book the he obviously knew what it contained and a the guy in the shop had said the police knew, he may have been talking about Officer Rose. “ I don't know what you're talking about Officer. He came right up to my face, he was visibly irritated “You don't, do you?” he then pointed a gun at Lauren “No, don't please” I begged “Tell me now or I shoot her” he could still kill us once I told him, if he knew I knew it would be game over, I had to convince him I didn't know what he was talking about “Officer Rose, what book are you talking.....” before I could even finish he shot Lauren. I felt myself falling as she fell lifeless to the ground “I'm not here to mess around Brandon tell me now or you join her”. I was numb. My fear, my selfishness and greed and not destroying the book when I had a chance had led to me losing the only person I truly cared about. “ Shoot me you pig” I shouted then spat on his face. He smiled and said “I’ll find it with or without you” he then put the gun to my head and pulled the trigger. That was the end, after getting all the money and freedom to do whatever I wanted I was now dead just like the the guy who had passed it on to me. The story began tragically and so it has ended.

My head was still spinning from hitting the back of the seat so hard and the driver was holding my hand with a very uncomfortable grip and had been shouting at me in a mix of Portuguese and English. As bad as my head felt all I could think was, i had to get out of there fast. All I had in my favour was that I was sweating and so was he, if I could wriggle my wrist from his grasp I could make a break for it. I did it I was free, I then throw myself against the door and ran like I had never run before. I didn’t turn around but I knew he would be chasing me all I could do was run. Before he even touched me I knew I was caught he had thrown himself at my legs and knocked me down before I could even catch my breath he was on top of me. I was struggling hard and punching nothing but air and he was sitting on my stomach making hard for me to breathe. “Stop”he kept on saying “stop struggling lady”, “Get off me” I screamed back “Lady I don’t want to hurt you”. “Get off me then, get off, help somebody help!”. Suddenly out of nowhere there was a loud gun shot and the driver took off with lighting bolt speed. I on the other hand was too scared and tired to move, I heard footsteps approaching “Are you okay?” Said a male voice in Portuguese “I think so” I answered as he helped me to my feet “Where were you going, can I help you get there?” He said “How do I know I can trust you” I asked not wanting to trust anyone at this point “ Well you can’t but I’m all you’ve got, plus I did kinda save you just now, didn’t I?” I’m not sure what happened but I think I must have passed out cause the next thing I had known I was in a very comfortable bed in a dim lit room. “Where am I?” I thought I asked no one “Heaven” a voice said then laughed. “How are you feeling little lady?”. I suddenly realised I wasn’t wearing anything oh my gosh I was naked in a room with a man and I had been passed out the whole time. My whole body shuddered with thoughts of what could have happened. I could hear him approaching as he got closer he was asking “Hey little lady won’t you answer me, Are you okay?” I stayed silent and waited as soon as I felt him touch my shoulder I went into self-defence mode and rolled him up onto the floor “Woah, woah Senhora hold up”. “Where are my clothes?” I asked trying to sound intimidating more than scared he pointed to a nearby chair. I slowly got off him and walked towards the chair while I was still looking at him “Don't move” I said trying to stop my voice from shaking. Suddenly the door opened and a young lady walked in “ Hey, your up on your feet I see, how are you feeling?” she asked me “Who are you guys? What do you want with me?” I retorted. “All we have done is help you and.... I didn’t let her even finish “I don’t need your help anymore I’m fine I just want my clothes and my bum bag then I’ll go if you don’t mind?” I said “Yeah of course everything is over there” she told me pointing at the dressing table “But it’s all pretty dirty I was going to wash it, you know what I have some clothes that will probably fit you let me get it for you” Before I could say anything she left the room “I’ll leave you then” said the man I had just pinned to the ground moments before “Your the one who saved me from the driver, right?” I asked him “Yes, that was me,Luis” he said smiling “Thank you Luis, and sorry for pinning you down like that” i said apologetically “It’s ok I understand, I’ll leave now” as he left the girl came back with a shirt and shorts for me “it’s pretty hot out there, you should be okay in this” “Erm Thank you... I paused “Marcella!!” ...Marcella”. “Will you eat before you go, my Grandma and I have made food you should eat I'll fix you a plate, you get dressed and come and eat, Ok?” once again before I could answer she left. I quickly freshened up and got changed then checked my bum bag if anything had been taken luckily everything was intact but I had dropped my phone in the taxi so that sucked and even worse all my notebooks and pads and all my luggage was all still in the taxi. All I had that was actually mine was the money in my bum bag and my emergency credit card. What the hell am I going to do? I questioned myself. I was screwed before I had even started. “Alex, Are you coming to eat, hurry it's still nice and warm!” I heard Marcella shouting up “I'm coming” wait how did she know my name I thought to myself, went down ready to question her but there were so many people sitting around a big table with so much food on it “Come and sit next to me, Alex ,come and meet my family while you eat!. The food was amazing everything tasted so good and everyone was so relaxed and accepting of me and was treating me like I was family. Then there was a knock at the door “Luis, go and see who that is” Marcella instructed. “Hey, amigo how are you? I heard Luis asking the new arrival. “I should go now Marcella, I've overstayed my welcome” I whispered “ Ok, but you can come back anytime you want, your always welcome”. I thanked her and try to let her accept some money but she refused and hugged me and told me to be careful “You know what let me get Luis to take you wherever your going” once again before I could answer she went to Luis and his friend to make arrangements. “Alex, come and meet Ricardo he's going into town he'll drop you off where you want.” Ricardo was incredibly good looking with dark hair and eye, but I couldn't help feeling I had seen somewhere before but where?.

How I got home I don't even remember, my mind was in total confusion. How was it possible that in just a few hours I would be flying off to Brazil. I stood in front of my mirror in the bathroom and said to myself “You would have been so dumb to have quit your Portuguese lessons” despite myself I laughed I had to, to relieve some of the tension I was feeling. The hours sped by so fast, i couldn't believe it was already 9pm. As I lay in my bed trying to sleep my phone rang, it was Robert , What if he had changed his mind? I took a deep breath and answered the call "Hello, Robert" i said. "Hey, Alex I hope i didn't disturb you, Were you sleeping?" "No, i just got into bed now, Why is something wrong?" I said wanting to know any bad news quickly. I heard Robert smirk as if knowing my thoughts and said "No, no bad news only good news in fact, just wanted to let you know everything is ready for your trip to Brazil, your ticket has been brought, you'll fly 10am tomorrow morning, my driver will come and pick you up at 8am sharp so please be ready. And we've also booked your hotel for you, it's for a week but if for any reason you need an extension just call me up and I'll make it happen". "Ok, Robert, Thank you". "Any questions? he asked. There was a moment of silence then I said "Yes, just one, Why did you change your mind?". He didn't hesitate as I thought he might "Because I believe in you like someone believed in me some years ago, I know you have the potential now it's time for everyone else to see it". Thank you, Robert " was all I said but I wanted to say so much more. "Now get some sleep, Good night" he said and cut the call before I could even respond. I tossed and turned in my bed for hours before getting all but three hours of sleep, my mind was racing too much, Robert believed in me I couldn't let him down. 6:30am my alarm rang but I was already awake, now I'm not one to get nervous but i was pretty sure that was the feeling i was having when I heard a knock at my door at precisely 7:59am on the dot. ”Good morning Miss Alex, Are you ready to go?” Asked Greg , Robert’s personal driver and right hand man. ”I’m ready Greg” “Then where are your bags? , I will get them for you. “They are in the living room” without further direction he came into my house and located the living room, before I could ask him anything “Hey Alex are you trying to miss your plane? Anna’s voice rang from the car. ”Anna you came” Of course, you didn’t think I would let you go to the airport by yourself did you”. “Anna won’t you just come with me to Brazil please?” She just smiled i knew her answer even without her saying anything then she said “This is your moment, Alex own it’. Greg came out with my bags. ”Time to go Miss”he said and held open the car door for Anna and me. As i locked my front door and got into the car i finally felt ready and more sure of myself than i have ever been before Anna was right this was my moment. At the airport Anna kept giving me encouragement and holding my hand wouldn’t stop tell me that everything would be ok and that I had nothing to worry about and just do my best. She sounded more nervous than I felt “Anna” I finally interjected “Thank you, I’ll call you when I arrive, Ok?” “ Your going now?’ Is your plane ready to depart?” “Yes it is”. We exchanged our final goodbyes “If anything call me, and I mean anytime of day,ok?, promise me!”she said to me with almost tears in her eyes “l promise” my stomach felt so tight and I felt I might cry so I quick hugged her and walked away without another word. I hadn’t noticed before but my ticket was first class so I enjoyed a very peaceful 11+ hours of smooth flying with very little turbulence which is one of my biggest fears when on a plane. Finally we had arrived, as soon as I got off the plane it was baking hot and that was just after 6:30pm in the evening. It seemed like Robert had dealt with everything because it was an absolute breeze through customs and within like twenty minutes I was outside waving for a taxi. My Portuguese wasn’t perfect but I knew enough to help me survive so barging with taxi driver would be fun I told him I was going to A Senhora classica he seemed to know it after a bit of back and fourth on price I was on my way. Now the map on my phone had told me the hotel was twenty-five to Thirty minutes away but looking at my watch it had been fourty so I asked the driver “When will we be there please?” Small time was all he said so I waited another 10 minutes and asked again “Will we be there soon?” he said nothing but looked at me through his rear view mirror. Suddenly I felt uneasy it’s like he sensed it and said “Don’t worry pretty lady we will be there soon” I said nothing but nodded. Then I thought I should ring Anna maybe I was just being paranoid as soon as I picked up my phone he pulled the car over hard which threw me forward a bit stunning me he then grabbed my hand and said in really good English “I wouldn’t do that if I was you”.

I’ve never been really good at anything else except for writing, I would try everything at school from Maths to Art (which I’m good not great at) to even sports but I was never happy unless I was writing. So it came as no surprise to anyone that my dream career was to become a journalist. I started at a regional magazine publishing house and from there moved up, up and up all the way to a national publication called Oval View. Yeah I know I’m only a junior columnist at the moment but I’m just waiting for a big story to take me from the Unknow to the big leagues. Now I’ve been following a story very closely brewing in Brazil about the De Silva family, and wondering if that’s where my breakthrough lies. “Look Robert, I know something is going to happen something big you just have to trust me”. I was telling the Senior director of the paper. “Alex, it’s not that I don’t trust or believe in you it’s just that it's a lot of money for something that is still just a maybe”. “But it’s not just a maybe just in the last week small revelations have come out I just need to be there when the big one drops please Roberts, I’m begging you”. Robert looked at me then turned away as thinking and wrestling within himself as what he could say to me next after what seemed like an eternity he looked back at me. “I’m sorry Alex, I want to, believe me when I say I do but I need you here instead of out there in Brazil chasing something that could turn out to be a hoaxes” I was lost for words. I just stared at him, how could he say that it's like I have ever asked him for anything never pleaded with him so hard for anything. I had been there a whole year and never had a story catch me with such conviction that I sometimes felt I couldn’t breath. “Ok Robert” I said so sad and rejected, I left his office and picked up my jacket “Where are you going Alex?” Asked my only friend in the world Anna Cross, She was a Senior writer who had joined exactly a year before me. “I need some air” I said feeling angry, sad and deflated. As I stood outside watch the world go past I wondered what was my place in it?, What was I brought into the world to do?. I had always felt it was writing, What else was I good at?” “Ring, ring” my phone rang stoping my flow of thought “Alex, you need to get back in the office right now!” Robert shouted down the phone and then cut the call. He had never called me like that. As soon as I got into the building Robert was waiting for me at his office door “Please come in and take a seat” he said as he closed the door behind me. “Robert if this has anything to do with me storming out of the office I’m sorry, I promise it will never happen again”. Robert sat down opposite me and looked right into my eyes “The reason I called you back in here was to tell you your right Alex, it is time for me to trust you more , so pack your bags your going to Brazil tomorrow morning”. I was stunned, I couldn’t believe it. My inner journalist was telling me to question his sudden change of mind but he was saying what I wanted to hear so I simply said “ Thank you Robert, I won’t let you down” he simply nodded. As I walked out of his office to go and prepare for my trip I had no idea just how vastly my life was about to change, nothing could have prepared me for what was transpire in Brazil.
