Hush. Runner-Up in Unspoken Challenge. Top Story - October 2023.
Olivia trembled as she brought her knees to her chest and tried to make herself as small as possible. She lay on the floor in the dark and watched as dust floated down from the wooden slats above her, caught in the beam of light that leaked through the gap in her bedroom door. Her heart thundered, threatening to give away her position as she listened nervously.

Prey
Her blood-curdling scream echoed through the woods; startled birds leapt from their branches, soaring into the sky above. Blood pounded in her ears as Amy stood trembling, frozen in agony at the perpetual fear of looking down. White hot pain shook her body; nausea quickly followed. She refused to look, temporarily paralysed with shock. Unaware she was swaying, her eyes rolled, threatening to send her tumbling to the forest floor. She gritted her teeth, forcing every agonised breath between them and focused on not passing out.

Smitten
Toby raced across the beach towards the water. Warm sand caressed his toes as he prayed he wasn’t too late. He headed for the swell of the shallow waves as they crashed and glided their way closer to shore. He heard his parents call his name in the distance, warning him not to go far as he searched through the faces baking in the summer sun.
