TV Review: Hulu's 'The Looming Tower'
The Looming Tower is a terrific bit of potboiler television. That it also happens to hue very closely to the historic record prior to and immediately after September 11th makes it all the more compelling. Based on Lawrence Wright’s incredible 2006 bestseller, Hulu’s The Looming Tower is a remarkable achievement that is occasionally slowed by TV conventions but is nevertheless endlessly compelling.

Movie Review: 'Are We Not Cats'
Are We Not Cats is the kind of strange, small-budget, slice of life movie that hits me in a particular sweet spot. The film focuses on a bizarre fetish/addiction that is weird and rather dangerous and has a pair of unique and fascinating names. Are We Not Cats also has one of the best oddly intriguing titles outside of a Guy Maddin movie. That the title is a strange, twisted, comment on the movie rather than a direct expression from the movie only makes me like it more.

Movie Review: 'Actors of Sound: A Foley Art Documentary'
As much as I consider myself a student of film, history and craft, I must admit that there are aspects of the craft that I have taken for granted. One of the more glaring omissions from my film education is a study of sound design. Now, don’t misunderstand, I am aware of good sound design. I know it when I hear it. But, I must admit, I haven’t done much studying on the actual art behind sound design.

Movie Review: 'Every Day'
Every Day is a clumsy and dimwitted young adult fantasy romance that tries to use modern gender politics to assume relevance. A clever premise aside, Every Day pretty much stops at its clever conceit and assumed relevance without any thought or nuance given to what the ideas being presented really mean. If Every Day were any more competent, it would be truly offensive.

Classic Movie Review: 'Frantic'
For a movie called Frantic, it’s in no hurry to tell its story. Frantic is a 1988 thriller starring Harrison Ford and directed by Roman Polanski. Frantic was released nationwide on February 23rd, 1988, 30 years ago this weekend as I am writing about it and it will be featured on the next Everyone is a Critic Movie Review Podcast available on iTunes, Google Play and your favorite podcatcher on Monday, February 26. Here’s a preview of my part of the Frantic conversation.

Movie Review: 'Game Night'
When John Francis Daly and directing partner Jonathan Goldstein directed the utterly abysmal remake of Vacation I thought for sure I would never want to see their work ever again. Vacation is a vile and putrid remake of the beloved National Lampoon-Chevy Chase comedy that replaced that films’ humor with some of the ugliest and nastiest lowest common denominator gags imaginable.

Movie Review: 'Annihilation'
Annihilation blew my mind. From the opening scene to the bizarre ambiguous ending, Annihilation is a head-trip that never quits. Directed by Alex Garland, the mastermind behind Ex Machina, Annihilation combines aliens, existential crisis, and Natalie Portman into an awesome sci-fi acid trip with hints of Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick, and John Carpenter in its filmic DNA.

Ranking the Movies of 2018: Week 6
Black Panther blew my mind this week with its absolute awesomeness. While I could not make it my number one for the year, it leaped in at number three for the year and the number one overall movie of 2018 in terms of movies actually released this year. Ryan Coogler has changed the face of superhero movies, quite literally, and the world of superheroes is better for it.

Movie Review: 'Early Man'
I have always enjoyed the work of Aardman Animation. The Aardman brand of animation is good-natured, pleasant and always amusing. The latest Aardman effort, Early Man, featuring the voice of Academy Award winner, Eddie Redmayne, is in keeping with the good-natured, pleasant, and amusing Aardman brand. This story of cavemen, Bronze Age baddies, and soccer is well accomplished and consistent if not all that memorable.

Movie Review: 'Samson'
The biggest success for the movie Samson is that it isn’t completely terrible. That is not something that can be said of most Pureflix movies. The Pureflix brand of pandering, hateful, choir preaching religious entertainment tends to be terrible as both a movie and as a piece of religious propaganda. Samson is, at the very least, moderately entertaining. The makers of Samson stick to closely to the biblical legend and leave the propaganda to the hateful likes of the God's Not Dead franchise.

Movie Review: 'Black Panther'. Top Story - February 2018.
I don’t want to confine Black Panther to the fact of its nearly all-Black cast. However, as I sat to enjoy the latest addition to Marvel’s cinematic universe, the genuine importance of Black Panther’s identity washed over me and I felt a surge of excitement. Yes, there have been Black superheroes before; Blade especially stands out. But this is an entire universe of dark-skinned people portrayed with complexity and humor.

Ranking the Movies of 2018 Week 5
The two movies that made an impact this week were a pair of indie movies that have little hype and little attention compared to the massive mainstream releases that are being shoved down our throats. Becks, a romantic dramedy about a woman recovering from a break up, and The Ballad of Lefty Brown, a western about a sidekick brought to the fore, are the movies that should be making a splash in theaters but instead are already available for streaming.
