The Break in the Clouds
To have such a break in the weather was unusual. Unique, even. It's far from the washed out greys and browns, dark shadows and shrouding mist that they were used to... But the stark reminder broke through the clouds. Light, not lightness, a break in persistent cloud cover that flooded their little piece of the world with brightness. The cacophony of engines rumbling and rock moving began to fall to idle and succumb to the rumble of a thousand whispers, as word spread through the worksite.

Homecoming
Who would have thought that a dusty old Honda Accord could have moved her to tears... With the rear bumper still pushed in on the corner from when Mum reversed it into the heavy wooden gate that kept her home private, with maroon paint that was cracked and faded. The same car that had driven her to the airport years ago. She made so many promises, and wished she'd kept more of them. An awful, heavy sadness had draped over her as she looked at it, leaving her adrift between numbness and tears.

The Statement
Nothing was the same at this hour of the morning. The moonlight barely filtered the clouds, the stars hidden from view, casting strange shadows over furniture which should have seemed so familiar to him. The smell of microwaved butter chicken from hours before should have made him feel at home, calm. Normal. Michael sure as hell wasn't anything special - Rough stubble, short red hair, freckles. A pair of boxer shorts covering thin, speckled legs. Hands behind his back, zipties cutting into the skin and securing him to the back of the dining chair. Every sound he made was muffled by the pair of socks jammed into his mouth, drying out his tongue and causing him to breathe heavily through his nose.
