Love Bites
Vampires, the dark blood-sucking creatures of the night, have existed since their supposed first sighting in Eastern European graveyards during the time in the 17th-century when the dead struggled to stay below ground. Whether it is due to shallow graves, poor soil conditions, or faulty coffins, the undead has left their marks of fear and intrigue that have lasted until the modern-day. Vampires have come a long way from being feared creatures of the night or supposed tales of monsters stalking the forests beyond medieval villages; they have grown from being stories told to scare children into obeying their parents. In modern literature, vampires are now either the unsung heroes and/or the love interests of the protagonists in varied Gothic/Supernatural adult and young adult novels. Vampires are now beautiful monsters that reflect male and female sexuality. They unlock hidden reaches within humans, opening them up to the world of the supernatural and the pure, undiluted desire of exploring it and all its selfish possibilities.

Behind the Doll's Eye
Mina Bucur’s life wasn’t always this way. It used to be better, more vivid, and full of life. In her little village back home in Romania, death wasn’t around each and every corner. Death wasn’t a common topic of discussion at a dinner table full of lavish food and expensive wine. Life—life and all its wonders—was what Mina was used to talking about vibrantly back home with her family: her two lovely parents whose love was so sick and made Mina almost gag with glee; her two younger sisters who were so closely acquainted with trouble that it was an old friend for them and found them wherever they hid (unless their mother found them first, that is); and of course, her lovely grandparents, who lived through so much heartache and trials beyond comprehension, but still put fresh, lovely smiles on their experienced and lived faces. Mina loved her family, loved them so much that she would do anything for them—anything to save them from harm. Well. . . the day that Mina would take up that promise came sooner rather than never, much to her and her family’s misfortune.

The Rose Room
The day began as any another day did. Beatrice woke up, did her hour and a half ritual of getting ready for work, and left before the clock struck 8:00 A.M. Her life as an editor’s assistant was what she called “puzzle version.” Words—big and small, common and uncommon—crossed her vision each and every day., connecting her to things, places, people and ideas she never thought she could be connected to. She learned that certain things fit snug against her, and others placed themselves at a distance. A rare few confront her and inflict pain, leaving scars that will test the will of time with their permanence. Her life was consumed by words and all the feelings and emotions they could cause. She preferred it that way. To feel instead of experience. She’s done enough of that in her past. She’s done enough experiencing. Now . . . she's ready to live, truly live.

The Masquerade
The Masquerade I was sitting by the fireplace in the parlor of my family’s estate when the feeling of something pulling me was present in my mind. The color of the yellow walls was doing nothing to help calm my rattling nerves that were going to burst from under my skin and take on a life anew. I got up from the red velvet chair that was my usual safe space from the world, and went over to the dark wooden bookcases that made up one side of the room. I rested my perspiring forehead that began to moisten with sweat against the cool wood as a thought swam through my head.

My Sweet Assassin
I walked along the cobblestone alleyway without a care in the world— until I saw the wanted posters. The off-set yellowish color of the parchment complimented the brown brick walls it rested in the center of and the dirty, worn stone that made up the path to the town square. I stopped in my tracks and looked over the words of the poster, which by now, I've read dozens of times, but once more couldn't hurt. Could it?
