Mad About the Boy: The Noel Coward Story
If you’re not the kind of person who has cried silent tears at Brief Encounter, then maybe this isn’t the film for you. Mad About the Boy: The Noel Coward Story is a documentary about the prolific write and performer. I went to watch it yesterday, and was the youngest in the audience by I would guess, 20 years (and I’m no spring chicken). And I feel that’s a shame that a life that did so much is relegated to such a niche audience.

Are you there God? It’s Me Margaret (2023)
Yesterday, I took myself on an artist’s date (the solitary time out for your inner artist) to see the film Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret. It’s a school holiday week here in the UK and I expected that going to the pictures to see a film about the precipice of teenhood, the cinema would be filled with pre-teens and their Mums. (I had hoped to take my own daughter, but knew it would have been too hard – a story for another day). I was wrong about the audience. I was one of the youngest there. It was an audience yearning for nostalgia.

Women in Hats
Sometimes, before I fall asleep I see his grinning face and I want him to know that I am dangerous. I want to watch his fear as he stumbles backwards, over a cliff, or from the shot of my gun. He will learn, too late, that I meant “no” when I said it. I am a woman who watches old movies. So believe me when I say, I know about stylish revenge. It is best served wearing a hat.

Hey, I’ve done a funny!
Here’s a picture of me doing stand-up. It was from a gig I did last week. I was not particularly happy with my performance, but it doesn’t show in these photos. I also got one of my favourite pieces of feedback when a young woman said that she loved my bit on intersectional feminism.

Faith Domergue
Faith Domergue was a film actress, with a long career from her first film role as an uncredited part in the 1941 Blues in the Night, to 1974’s The House of Seven Corpses. Her busiest period was in the 1950s when she appeared in a number of science fiction, monster and horror movies, as well as a number of westerns. She was known as a Scream Queen.

Little Feminism
I have a joke in my stand up set, about how I used to be a “professional feminist”. I even co-edited a book on intersectional feminism and social work. But I’m now back to amateur status, since I gave up my academic job as a Domestic Abuse researcher. (As an amateur, my times have really suffered – it takes me much longer to rant a "man-athon").
