The Boy in the Tree. Top Story - October 2023. Content Warning.
The boy climbs into the branches of the tree and sits. He glowers in his black hoodie. He has positioned himself so that he cannot be seen from the road. He wants to look out but remain clandestine to others. He likes the power it gives him to see but be unseen. He has limited experience of control, it being robbed from him more often than not. It is intoxicating to feel in charge of his actions and tonight, he has a secret purpose and is composing himself for its execution. His weapon lays by the tree's roots, somnolent but ready to roar.

Fool's Errand - Merlin's Plan
Heavy. That's what I felt. I went over to the table and picked up the scroll. It was sealed with a ribbon tied to it. Expecting it to be light, I was surprised at its heft. Underneath attached to the scroll was a small leather pouch. Coins, I would imagine to help me on my quest. I would look at that later. Tucking it into my jerkin, where my cowl sits round my shoulders, for camouflage, I went over to the door and told the guard, "Call the Lord Chancellor. The King wants to see him."

Written Off. Content Warning.
I published a poem about a car accident I was in earlier this year. It is a reflective piece that looks at my thoughts and feelings after the event and the consequences of my actions that night. As a result of what happened, I was sent on a driving course, the purpose of which was to advise but also to assess and, I suppose, to rehabilitate.

The Lost Memory Sticks. Top Story - October 2023.
At the weekend, my husband gave me three USB sticks which he had discovered in a desk drawer. I'm not sure what he was looking for on these. It might have just been curiosity as to what they held rather than a particular search. Either way, he announced that I may want to look at them.

The Gap at Sycamore Gap
When I heard that the tree was no more at Sycamore Gap, I felt a sadness at its demise. We had just been warned of Storm Agnes which was approaching the UK with its windy savagery, churning up grey skies and heralding the beginning of colder, darker days. I thought that it was Agnes who had felled the tree but this was not the case. She had other havoc to wreak.

Fool's Errand - The King is Dead. Content Warning.
You can read the first part of this via the link below: Matthew Fromm set a High Fantasy challenge, the details of which are at the end and I entered it with Fool's Errand. My offering was a 500 word excerpt and introduced us to a fool, a jester. Such was the response from my supporters on Vocal, that I decided to write the next part and see where that took me. It may be the path to ignominy but unless that path is taken, I'll never know.

Fool's errand. Content Warning.
"He wants you." The Lord Chancellor interrupted my reverie, while I was tearing into my pork chop. I'd been hankering for one all evening at the banquet but, due to having to caper about amusing everyone, bells jingling, riddle-making and pulling faces behind people's backs, only now enjoying one. Jesting sounds easy, doesn't it? But it's hard work. And hungry work.
