Uttarakhand, formerly known as Uttaranchal, is a state in northern India. It is bordered by the states of Himachal Pradesh to the northwest, Haryana to the west, and Uttar Pradesh to the south. It is also bounded by the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China to the east, Nepal to the east and northeast, and the Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal to the southeast. The state is divided into two divisions Garhwal and Kumaon, with 13 districts. The capital of the state is Dehradun, the largest city in the state. It is home to some of India's most important Hindu pilgrimage sites as well as a number of Buddhist and Jain temples.
