A Laughing Goddess Rhamnusia
She stood in the kitchen and dried her hands. It was a mechanical gesture before cooking dinner for her and her husband. She did so every evening for 40 years, as long as they had been married. They were not especially beautiful hands, short and fleshy, and firm. Strong hands, she thought while playing with the dry cloth. She then turned towards the kitchen unit and continued her activities while looking with one eye into the unfolded cookbook.

Madam Hecate poured water into a small old oak beer keg and peered intensely at its surface. After a few minutes, she sneaked a peek at the woman sitting across from her and intoned, “A picture emerges.” With any luck, the old biddy would fall for her line.

The Fun of Fishing
Mark traveled a lot for work, loving the long hours waiting in airports and bus stations before going on a plane to yet another meeting as a senior shoe consultant, teaching shop owners the ins and outs of the perfect shoe, and the way to set up business and retail. He was good at his work; having a Ph.D. in Arts and Business Administration, he was well aware of his own qualities. The pay was good too, so life was excellent, days were well spent, and his mood was always perky.

Mirror, mirror
I was sleepy and exhausted so I decided to take an early nap that Wednesday evening. I did my rituals, took a shower, and dressed in my sleeping gown I went to bed. My dog Arie already was sleeping on one of the pillows so I had to move to the other side. It was 10.30 when my head hit the bed. I was off in a jiffy.
