A Winners- The A-Z of Unusual Words
As someone who hits refresh on contest announcement days, I owe you all an apology. We have been an illness-laden household this week and I couldn't put the time into this that I wanted until now. (Unfortunately, this is because I am writing this from my own sick bed...)

Velum. Top Story - August 2024.
Liss had not been assigned to a watch shift since the new captain had taken charge. When she used to take her turn, she always asked for the window that stretched from twilight through dawn. She would begin the shift with her belly stretched across the bow, head over the side, watching for haloes of bioluminescence to indicate the wildlife below. In addition to the size of the cloud of light, the changes in shape could show her the difference between the jerky forward pulse of a nocturnal squid and the glide of a sleek whale. At times, it was almost as if a spiral staircase descended into the depths. Nobody else could ever see it, though. At that time of night, there weren’t very many people around to try.

The Selfless Room. Top Story - August 2024.
The new entrant to my group forgot to leave phones at the door. Our project of the moment was a locket that, when worn, could make someone so sad that they forget about all loved ones. Our task was to hover around, a halo of no person, and focus on the troublesome aura to relocate to a secure capsule. As the force moved, a call buzzed from a pocket. The curse must have dashed to the phone. The locket was unburdened, but we were not successful. The phone screen flashed, a grad photo of a boy flanked by two parents. My breath caught.
