During the Storm
The outer bands were already sweeping across south Texas, hundreds of miles from the eye of the hurricane. I pulled on my mud boots and windbreaker and headed out to the old red barn, my favorite building on the farm. It smelled like sweet feed and hay with a hint of horse manure, and my kids were unlikely to brave the storm to come and find me out there. When they did venture out to the barn, I tended to put them to work raking out stalls.

Monsters
On most nights, it was a monster of some kind threatening us from the TV in my grandparents’ bedroom. This time, however, a woman’s head protruded from a 4 x 4 metal box that sported a variety of colorful switches and buttons. She was clearly displeased with her mad-scientist husband, who had acquired a beautiful new body for her and was preparing to remove the body’s current head and replace it—carefully, of course—with her own.

Cowboy and BJ
The cold water slowly permeated the soft fur of his undercoat as he paddled across the Trinity River toward the smell of a campfire and roasting fish. He tried to suppress the memories, but they just kept stalking him. “You know what these here fish are called, Cowboy-my-man? They’re CATFISH! You heard me right.” He loved his dad and his goofy sense of humor. (Dad knew perfectly well that cats hate water.)

Old Souls
Jacob breathed deeply and concentrated on maintaining a neutral facial expression. He suppressed the urge to feel anything upon his successful escape. He could not allow himself to think about his family, but he was determined to get home through the shortest route possible. Thankfully, his older siblings knew of his plan, just not the exact timing.
