Big Ben sits on the banks of the Thames

Big Ben was designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin in a Neo-Gothic architectural style. When it was completed in 1859, it was the largest and most accurate four-sided clock in the world. The shield on the tower represents all four major regions of the United Kingdom: roses for England, thistles for Scotland, shamrocks for Northern Ireland and leeks for Wales.
