Birth and Early Life (1280-1307) Mansa Musa, also known as Musa I of Mali, was born in 1280 in the town of Niani, part of the Mali Empire in West Africa. He was a member of the Keita dynasty, a royal family that had ruled Mali for several generations. His father, Faga Laye, was the ruler of Niani, and his mother's name was Nana Triban.
