"There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Right grandpa?" Pepito asked, wanting the whole story from 'the source' of his parents' bedtime tales and nightly dreams. It was Pepito's first visit to the Dragopolis Valley, where elders, adults, and juveniles gathered once a year in May from all regions. The eldest of the family met with their grandchildren to pass on the stories of their ancestors. The adults mingled, hoping to find their lifemate. The juveniles played among themselves, watched the adult courting and mating ceremonies, and listened to their grandfather's stories.

The day I walked to school alone was the last time it happened. On my way, I approached the house my two older brothers told me had a 'pet crow'. There he was, perched high up on a leafless branch. He stood out like a black crayon surrounded by the other seven colors in my Crayola Pack. He tilted his head and disapprovingly looked down at me. I smiled up at him and shared my thoughts. I know I'm going to get into trouble for this but I'll never do it again. At that moment, a car pulled up from behind and stopped. I moved over as the passenger door opened. An older man was leaning over with his left hand holding the steering wheel, and supporting himself with his right hand outstretched on the front seat closest to me. For two years, I walked past this house daily on my way to clean houses for clients in my neighborhood. I loved everything about it, like, the sky blue wooden shingles with white trim, the bedroom windows above the front porch, the driveway on the left side leading to the back yard, a long rose bush bordering the right, and the maple tree providing shade for the back deck. Then one morning, there was a FOR RENT sign on the front lawn. My heart filled with joy, I wrote down the real estate agent's number and called as soon as I arrived at my first house of the day. I was informed by the agent to complete an application form online and pay a non-refundable $200 deposit, after which, if selected I would be interviewed by the owners before being able to receive any more information, including a showing of the house. After I hung up, a seed of doubt had been planted but I remained optimistic because I knew this house was special. I felt it.

The first time I feared humanity for being a minority was in 2007. I was in Toronto city to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs vs the Ottawa Senators. As I walked across the parking lot sporting my new Senators hockey jacket, there were clouds of smoke and open tailgates displaying a variety of beverages to lounging home team patrons, I created a wake of laughter on my way towards the bright resonating stadium. The elevator door opened. As I stepped out into the hallway, Dave had let go of the leash when a little black dog began running towards me from the end of the hall like a racehorse released from the gate. His long ears flapping up and down and tongue hanging out on one side. I stood still, not seeing any sign of slowing down, and positioned myself as a linebacker would. At that moment, I only knew one thing, I had fallen in love.
