Mikayla Plett
Bio
I’m interested in how the human mind works, and this is part of what motivates me to write. I lean towards thriller, dystopian, and suspense writing, with humour sprinkled throughout.

See You Soon
“Do you think you’re ready to tell me about that day?” my therapist asks. We’d been meeting for a couple of months, and I still hadn’t been able to talk about the thing that got me into this chair in the first place. He’s been locked up for one year today, and I felt waking up this morning that today should be commemorated.

Taking Back Earth
The audacious sound was beating on my eardrums as I awoke. Gunfire filled the air, and I saw bullets flying like rain in a windstorm just a kilometer in front of me. Once I realized what the sound was, I started running. There was a small clump of evergreen trees nearby, and I tucked myself inside the small haven of safety in this hellish valley. The chill in the air made me realize I had a necklace around my neck; it felt cold against my chest. It felt foreign to me, so I lifted it off my chest to look at it - a locket. I opened the heart-shaped pendant to reveal a picture of two humans: a boy and a man.

Recoil
My alarm going off was like a bell swinging back and forth in my head and rattling my brain. Those two hours of sleep were as useful as an umbrella in a hurricane. Since my husband died last year, I haven’t gotten more than four hours of sleep in a day. I finally went to the doctors last week to try to break this cycle, and the doctor started by recommending melatonin and a regular nighttime routine. Clearly, that hasn’t been working too well. I have another appointment today where I will hopefully get something stronger for my insomnia.
