The Seventh Step. Top Story - June 2024.
“It’s a different room every time. Sometimes it’s my grandma’s house from when I was little. Sometimes it’s my college apartment. Sometimes it’s somewhere unfamiliar, but always there are the stairs. I know I have to go up, but I’m afraid. I can feel my heart pounding and I feel sick, but I don’t know why. It’s like my body isn’t mine anymore, and I start up the stairs, and I’m thinking ‘No, stop!’ but I just keep going. When I get a ways up, I try to take another step but, instead, I fall backwards. I can feel myself in the air, just in a panic, nothing to hold on to and no way to stop, just falling, falling, falling until THUMP! And then I wake up.”

A show that seems more niche than it actually is, OMITB centers on true crime obsessives who become three unlikely amigos and start a podcast to solve a string of murders in their posh Manhattan building. Darkly hilarious and emotionally evocative with a brilliant cast, this series is a must-see.

WandaVision
A Marvel Cinematic Universe show that was hugely popular and fun to watch, WandaVision presented a clever take on loss, grief, and the psychopathology of superhumans. However, the twist felt unearned, a "switcheroo" instead of a satisfying reveal, and Legion handled the same topics earlier and better, without any fanfare.

Roar and Whisper
Parents shouldn't have favorites amongst their children, but nonetheless, they often do. Such is the case for our Mother, the ocean, as she seems to hold her island-dwelling offspring closest to her heart. While "human advancement" shifts our collective focus to the banal and prosaic, moving us, over centuries, farther and farther from the wonderment of creation, our Mother maintains on islands places of the greatest beauty, the greatest magic. One of these blessed places is Ireland, and this story begins there.

You’ve jogged past the cabin a thousand times, though you know your mother would be furious if she knew. There’s something about the woods at night that feels so liberating, invigorating, and yes, maybe even a little spooky. A little unsafe. So you changed your usual course a while ago, and maybe that little tingle of fear, that invisible, primordial pressure on your shoulders, makes you run just that much faster. And what could be wrong with that? Not a thing, of course.

Red, Bread, Redemption
The first time I really ate a tomato was years after the first time I’d tried one. For most of my childhood, tomatoes seemed like a cruel joke: ruby red, shiny and promising, begging to be tasted, only to deliver a flavorless, mealy mouthful of lies. Sliced up straight from the fridge or surrounded by ice of questionable hygiene in the salad bar of our local pizza place, the tomatoes of my youth in the 90s were, frankly, a travesty. I can’t remember a single kid I knew who liked tomatoes. I knew people who liked brussel sprouts, but not tomatoes. For a long time, all I wanted for lunch was a cheese and pickle sandwich, and I was known to eat blue cheese and radishes as an after school snack, but tomatoes? No thanks.
