The best acting is instinctive. ~Craig MacDonald~ Stuart barely escaped the clutches of the beat officer before diving into the #1 MUNI bus at Sacramento and Hyde. The aged uniformed, grossly rouged cop lost track of the suspect only two blocks prior. Thankfully for Stuart, he turned corners rather quickly thus obstructing the copy from any chance of seeing his impassioned leap on the city bus and into the unsuspecting lap of one of an elderly lady. She could’ve been his grandmother in another life. Stuart imagined the lady, who by now was screaming at him in a language he didn’t speak, baking gooey mac and cheese or layering the perfectly textured banana pudding--not too firm of pillowy--just for him on holidays.

Picture this: You are meeting your friends for a Saturday brunch on 14th Street in Washington, DC. Good times are rolling, birds are flying high. Then you walk your tipsy, wobbly legs to your car only for there to be a ticket on your window-shield.

Elephant of the Ring
Two things that I’ve learned: 1) Clothes don’t make the man, jewelry does. 2) Elephant ghosts are persistent. The one item I’ve found in all of my thrifting finds that stands the test of time beyond any pair of shoes, pants or winter sweater is one single ring bearing the likeness of an elephant head. That one ring has been in my possession since October 2015. The story that led me to the treasure can never be forgotten.

Shift Your Weight
The once chunky kid who shopped in the husky section at clothing department stores lost a lot of weight between his sophomore and junior years in high school. Yes, that kid was me. I was active in the theatre department at school, sang in the show choir, the whole nine. After the weight loss, I delved deeper into what it means to be a physical actor. The previous year, I was a munchkin in The Wiz. I was no stranger to running around on stage. The habit carried in almost every role I took on thereafter. Not only was I growing in confidence as an actor but as a mover, a dancer.

Things I Imagined
We all enjoy the moments when the world feels as though it’s pressing a weight on our chests right? The times when every voice in our head is loud and heavy or when the emotions whirlwind their way through our nervous system resulting in waves of anxiety, depression, shrinking or mania. Great, now that we have established how much of a nonsensical lie that all is, we can begin to explore the artistic avenues that steer us to peace, to a weightless free flow of thought and deed, to music that guides us to still waters. Look no further than the neo-soul, cancer zodiac river musical goddess that is Solange.

Dear Pastor
Dear Tati, The sheer fact that I’m writing an inspirational letter about you that’ll be presented on a public forum is already pretty gross. You don’t have to tell me. It’s a complete reversal of all that our friendship stands for. We don’t do openly affectionate expressions. We barely do it in front of other people and that’s what makes us work. That isn’t to say we don’t share how grateful we are for each other. When we do so, it’s beautiful. Seeing how it’s been a while since the previous friend love fest, here we go. Love me now, hate me later.

Pearsons, Meet the Bordelons
Family dramas illicit many emotions, ranging from joy to rage. They have the unique ability to pull at our heart strings like no other genre of television can. I’ve found myself laughing uproariously at a joke made by Beth Pearson as if she was my aunt on Christmas morning. These families become our families for better and, because these shows are so painstakingly accurate in how they portray the human condition, they become our families for worse. Still, we allow ourselves to open up to their experiences through the vehicle of qualified actors, writers, directors, camera crews, editors and show-runners. This particular recommendation is for those of us who have fallen head over heels for the unconventional, often out-of-time storytelling that makes This Is Us work so damn well. Have I got a treat for you, another show that began the same year as This Is Us and rises to the occasion every time. It’s name is Queen Sugar.

Sea Nomads
Hold your breath for as long as you can. Do it after an intense cardio workout, in the full bathtub, after years of training like an Olympian and my bet is that you won’t be able to achieve what the Sama-Bajau people accomplish every day off the coast of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. What distinguishes these nomadic peoples living and hunting for food in flotillas among the water is that, unlike a Michael Phelps who’s been noted to hold his breath for 22 minutes, these people can hold their breath for potentially 15 minutes while being more than 200 feet below the surface of the ocean!

This Watery Earth
Not every Capricorn is obsessed with money and inherently cold. That’s the opinion of people who, forever reason, felt threatened by our presence. I’ve been in situations where people hear Capricorn and immediately they put their guard up or whip out their extraordinarily limited understanding of what the sign represents. Oddly enough, I’ve been in the presence of a Capricorn other than myself since I was born. I can tell you this about us—we are some of the quirkiest, silliest human beings. Admittedly, yes, we can appear cold if anybody pisses us off or chooses disrespect over common sense. Specific to myself, I resonate greatly with the major identifying tenets of the Capricorn sign. Though I be a person of earth, my moon sign resides in Scorpio, a water sign. I am in many ways a rock filled with water.
