The strange disappearance of Patricia “Patti” Adkins
Ohio has an extraordinary number of unsolved homicide and missing persons cases. One of the most intriguing ones I have followed for years is the story of Patti Adkins. Patti, a 29-year-old single mother worked at the Honda plant in Marysville, Ohio. After leaving work on June 29, 2001, she vanished. It’s been over twenty years since anyone has seen or heard from her.

Justice denied: The Christie Mullins murder
I think it’s fair to say that whenever we see stories about unsolved homicides; it makes us angry. Although we didn’t’ know the victim, we just hope to never experience having a family member go missing or die under unusual circumstances. Imagine someone taking the life of a sibling, significant other or parent and going years without finding out who killed this person and why.

Military injustice: Part 3 of 3
For the past two weeks, I have written about soldiers who were murdered or died under unusual circumstances. What I find disturbing is that so many soldiers would still be alive had they just avoided the military. And I am not talking about soldiers who died on the battlefield. I am referring to soldiers who died stateside. Unfortunately, many are now deceased because they didn’t receive help from their superiors. For the last part of this story, I will profile three female soldiers who were failed by the military.

Military injustice: Part 2 of 3
Last week was the first part of a three-part story about men and women who died young after joining the military. For this week’s story, I wanted to share the stories of three more stories who died tragically. Two were murdered while the other died under suspicious circumstances. All three soldiers swore to protect America and ended up dead before their time. Unfortunately, all three would probably still be alive had they not joined the military.

Military injustice: Part 1 of 3
During the late 1980s, I joined the Indiana National Guard and then eventually transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves. I served for several years and then received an honorable discharge. Most of my fellow soldiers were superb people. But what sticks in my memory is understanding what it meant to leave no man behind.

Mysterious celebrity deaths
Hollywood is the place where movie stars are made. People travel in droves to make it big in the movie business. But most people who pursue stardom have little or no chance of ever becoming a household name. If lucky, they find a few roles as an extra.

The Berlin Reservoir killings
If you scan the news for the latest true crime stories, you will see many disturbing cases across America. Fortunately, many of them get solved by dedicated homicide detectives. Many of these killers get captured because they knew their victims. But there are many cases that have gone unsolved and will probably remain that way. Many of them occurred before DNA and modern science. And if law enforcement solves the homicide, the killers are often already deceased.

The wheels of justice can turn painfully slow
Before advances in genetic testing, if someone committed a brutal homicide, either he would avoid capture or an innocent person would end up in prison. When genetic testing came out, it freed many innocent people. Whenever I scan the latest news for true crime stories, I always look for updates on cold cases. It still amazes me when I see a killer captured 30 or 40 years after committing a heinous crime.

The lost sister: Where is Jessica Masker?
For many of us, our siblings are our closest friends. As kids, we may fight and disagree over things that now seem so trivial. But our siblings will often watch our backs. But what happens if one of your siblings disappears? It’s not like there is an instruction manual that prepares us for this situation. I recently spoke to a young woman named Christina Masker, who has spent the past eight years searching for her missing sister.

The abduction of Dorothy Forstein
Every year, people disappear. Although most of them return home, many others never do. What happens to these missing people? Did aliens abduct them? Although I don’t subscribe to alien abductions, it makes for good television. When people vanish, they have either walked away from their lives or someone else killed and disposed of them.

The mama's boy
Most of us can appreciate our mothers. In most instances, they are nurturing and kind. Whenever we need a good meal, a small loan or just someone to lend a sympathetic ear, we often seek our mothers. But the best mothers teach us how to live without them. They are like the mother bird that prepares her nestlings for their independence.

The sisterhood of evil
I consider Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer two of the evilest serial killers in our lifetime. There have been countless books, movies, and documentaries written about these two monsters. Whenever we think about serial killers, we usually exclude women. Other than Aileen Wuornos, there aren’t too many high-profile female serial killers.
