Da Fall in da Usher House
Authors note: The following story was originally published by Vice-Versa Journal in 2010. I wrote this for a creative writing class while working towards my BA in English. I am Native Hawaiian, born and raised in the lands of my ancestors so it is written in Hawaiʻi Pidgin English; colloquial language of the Hawaiian islands. Please enjoy.

Savor Some Real Hawaiian flavor. Runner-Up in Nourished Challenge. Top Story - December 2025.
Poke. It seems like it's everywhere these days. Everyone and their Mama/Papa/Aunty/Uncle/Sistah/Braddah/Cousin/Friend has opened up some sort of poke business, eaten at one of these shops, or at the very least, seen references about a poke place at least once in their lifetimes. It is currently a popular source of nourishment around the world, and due to its growing fame, has been featured on TV, print, radio, blogs and vlogs all over.

Life in the NICU
It was a normal pregnancy; nothing out of the ordinary. Quad marker and diabetes tests were great, the heartbeat was strong, the baby was moving fine. I was full-term and the Doctor assured us that there was nothing to fear. Yet, less than ten minutes after she was born, our newest daughter was taken from my arms and rushed out of the delivery room. The nurses who had been administering their regular newborn tests explained that she had to be whisked away to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit because her blood sugar was dangerously low.
