It looks perfect from here. The ocean is still. The cliffs stretch endlessly to the north and south, made romantic by the golden light of late afternoon. A hawk turns in the air. Waves whisper below, like they know how this will end.

The new employee stepped through the automatic doors of the Supermarket, ready to begin their first day. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead. The smell of cleaning supplies and out-dated food slapped them in the face. Various shelves lacked product. Odd stains littered the walls and tiled floor.

When the Water Didn't Come. Runner-Up in The Summer That Wasn’t Challenge.
They’d spent all of May waiting for the lake to rise. By June, it became clear that it wasn’t going to. Every year, for as long as she could remember, it would flood like clockwork. Not literally, of course, just in the sense that it would become fuller. The boats would come out, the fishing poles would emerge from garages, and the kids would start daring each other to jump off the dock.

At the end of the hall, there’s a room we don’t talk about. Mother calls it the “Sewing Room”. She says it in the same tone she uses when talking about frozen casseroles or tax deadlines; blunt, flat, leaving no room for a second opinion. The “Sewing Room” hasn’t seen a spool of thread in, at least, thirteen years; a blatant lie, so we don’t talk about it long.
