Jack and Darrell
Jack came up to the side of the road. He anxiously looked at his watch and wondered how long he would have to wait for some compassionate soul to come by and give him a ride to Port Oliver. It was 8 pm on the dot. He had to get to Mary. He had to explain. The cold rain had turned to snow and he despaired of anyone stopping to pick him up on this lonely road. He decided to walk back towards St. Francis where there was a gas station and a restaurant not too far down the road. Maybe someone there could help him.

A Pandemic Revisited
" Pandemics have been around ever since humans entered the hunter gatherer stage and began to engage in trade with other people groups. The World Health Organization describes a pandemic as "an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people." The most deadly pandemic, and the one with the most impact on European society, was the bubonic plague. Also called the Black Death, the plague officially began in the mid-14th century. The plague had already been wreaking havoc in China, India, and the Middle East when a fleet of ships filled with dead and dying crew members sailed into the Sicilian port of Messina. Although the ships were immediately sent on their way, it was too late. The plague had hit Italy and it spread like wildfire through Europe and North Africa via trade routes.

Dinner to Remember
She didn't know why he had called her after all this time. In fact, if he hadn't called her by her name, she would've thought he had the wrong number. Four years ago, she would have been over the moon that he had asked her out, but now she felt only curiosity. He had been her crush all through high school, but she was too shy to ever approach him and he was too cool to ever notice her. At home she would doodle their names together in hearts, Kelly and Conrad forever, or practice writing her married name, Mrs. Kelly Smith. She cringed at the silliness of it. She had come home from college a different person. She was a strong, confident businesswoman now working in the HR department of a successful IT firm. She was no longer a shy immature child who would fall for a vain, self-absorbed jock like Conrad Smith.

Gemini
I don't put much stock in astrology. As tweens, my friends and I would read our horoscopes and check our signs for insights into our, and each others', personalities. Just for fun. Some were right on, some were way off. I don't think any of the prognostications ever came true. Really, that the same attributes apply to every single person born within a particular 30-day period seems to be nonsense. Add to that the daily predictions of what is going to happen to each and every one of the people under a certain sign, whether they are 7 or 87, and you have a system that is impossible to believe in. That being said, I thought it would be intriguing to revisit my astrological sign and see how closely it fits my actual adult life. I had to look up my sign on the great font of all things true - the internet.

You Can't Go Home Again
She had trouble finding the place. Of course, it had been 45 years since she had been there. She remembered it so clearly, though - the big tree ascending to the sky from the water surrounding its roots. It was there at the secondary entrance to the beach. Now a wooden fence blocked that entrance. No wonder she couldn't find it. She stepped onto a stump to look over the fence. Where the old tree once stood, there was only water. There wasn't even any beach - just lake. She was taken aback and then realized the stump she was standing on was that very tree. The feeling of disappointment was oddly profound. What did she expect?
