Freedom From Sexual Shame
With my recent rewatch of Shimoneta, and while I still believe in everything that I said in my first post on that series, there is something else that I want to cover. More specifically, a certain character, and many of the things the series shows with her.

With what I've posted so far here, while it's obvious that I enjoy sexual subjects in my anime, you may think that I'm only a fan of comedy ecchi. That couldn't be further from the truth though. The most recent addition to my favorite anime is one that came out a few years ago, and while not overtly sexual in the same way other series I've talked about here are, has a lot of connotation to it that makes it incredibly intriguing.

Swords, Sorcery, and Societal Pressure
This month is my birthday, so I want to talk about some of my favorite anime. The night prior to my writing this, I watched the entire series, so everything was well and fresh in my head. It had been a few years since I'd seen it last, but I still remembered so much about it. And while most people haven't heard of it before last year, if you're looking for a silly evening, I highly recommend it. Even if only for the scavenger hunt of metal references, to which they are everywhere.

Shimoneta
Recently, I felt the need to rewatch a series that I had randomly found when looking at a list of the weirdest anime. I loved how different it was, and felt like it was a good balance of ecchi and comedy, without being the sort of show that just tiptoes that line between anime and hentai. Mostly anyway.

Fire in his Fingertips
Very seldom does the cover image for an anime make me want to look into it, but every so often one manages to. I go hunting for something, then find the manga, and start reading. I got up to date for what was out when I started reading, but won't keep up with this series for a number of reasons. It's a shame when something actually does draw me in, and fails to deliver in any way. With trying to find more things to write on though, I find myself drawn to far more media.

Prison School
I'm in no way new to the breadth of the world of kink. It's something I have quite a bit of knowledge in, to the point where outside of blogs, I give lectures, and teach classes on how to go about it safely. Like with all things though, there are trends that occur, and that counts doubly so in the age of the internet. When we have social media allowing people to turn kinks into memes, some of them are going to leak through into mainstream media, and subsequently become jokes.

Catherine
Let's talk about a particular Japanese game that's fairly popular here in the states today. I love the concept of the game, and the style of it, but whenever I look at a lot of the story, and many of the beats involved in it, it becomes a far more difficult thing for me to manage in how I go about my own life. As we start navigating ethical non-monogamy more, and the many interpersonal structures it creates, this game holds less and less water.

Realistic examples of sexuality in anime is something to honestly never pass up, much like all of my previous praise for Nana to Kaoru that I've already given. Things that aren't outlandish, or some picture perfect idea of finding a partner and having sex right away with no hiccups. Things that show all of the speed bumps and bumbling that everyone goes through.

Ecchi Body Types
Rather than focusing on one particular show, there's an overall trend in both ecchi and quite a bit of hentai that I want to bring up. It shouldn't be surprising to anyone honestly, but it's something that we need to actually discuss, and make notice of, in hopes that something will change. That something is the lack of variety in body types, as well as the shaming of different bodies.

Domestic Girlfriend
A little behind, I know, but I only just recently got around to watching Domestic Girlfriend. It's not the sort of thing I would normally give time to, but when I heard the overall premise, it was just too jumbled up for me not to be interested. It focuses on tropes I don't normally enjoy, and honestly have actively avoided at multiple times in my life. Here though, we have things presented so differently from most other anime, that while frustrating, it was refreshing to see some manner of realism in such a taboo situation.

A Strangely Affirming Anime
Let's talk about Interspecies Reviewers. Yes, an anime that was probably one of the most contentious last year, and tiptoed the line between ecchi and hentai. It caused a lot of problems for dubbing companies, and how it would air at all, due to the content it showed and discussed. Along with all of that though, it's an incredibly affirming anime and manga with many positive messages within it.
