Boots on the Ground
It was always wet. The moisture seeped into everything. Ammunition. Guns. Boots. Jackets. Bags. Field rations. Our socks were perpetually soaked through. We were wet and cold. The men were fighting off pneumonia and hypothermia while fighting the cold. It was all we could do to keep warm. Make fires when the rain stops. Rest when the rain stops. Dry off best we can when the rain stops. They came to me to complain. This wasn’t new to me. I’d fought in wars before. Seen horrors before. They came to me, called me Doc, implored me for some kind of miracle cure. I had nothing. I barely had any dry gauze. It was after this complaining we’d sit around the fire and quietly talk. It could’ve been like a camping trip if the threat of the enemy wasn’t omnipotent to us. We barely had a clue of where we were; our compasses had broken a few days ago. Making fire at night was practically a death sentence in our eyes.

I had just caught a glimpse of him, but I was convinced that was Jefferson Lang, the recent missing person. I made my way to the man with short black hair through the sea of red. I put my hand on his shoulder and he turned around.

Davenmoor Manor
Davenmoor Manor stood tall atop its darkened hill. The wrought-iron gate creaked from phenomenon unknown while shadows danced along corroded walls and empty window frames. The manor had once been an object of everyone’s envy with its marbled columns and ivied walls; now, it stood desolate in the dark. I had come to find out the true reason it was deserted, and to see if all the rumors whispered through dimly lit aisles of occult bookstores were true. Armed with a camera, extra film, my journal, and my pen, I walked through the overgrown and dying ground. Trees laid bare and fallen while what little of the once lush garden remained was now a tangle of dead weeds and decaying flowers and bushes. The rotting door was stuck due to something I couldn’t place, and my shoulder almost broke trying to get it open.

Peace and Quiet
They were too loud. What were once whispers in the back of my mind were now screams. There was someone missing, the one person who kept them all back. My body hurt. My mind hurt. My head hurt. I coughed and blood caked my lips. I wanted to open my eyes, but the darkness was so comforting. What had happened? My stomach hurt. I needed to open my eyes. I could barely think. I wanted a smoke. I forced my eyelids open only for my eyes to roll into my head. Maybe I should have gone back to sleep. The black was so comforting. Just a quick nap then…
