On Getting Stabbed In The Eye By A Doctor
In case anybody missed me yesterday (the milkman, rent collector, that sort of thing) I was missing in action. Last month when looking at my screen I noticed a slight shade of grey in my vision, like maybe I had somehow got a smear of grease on the surface of my eye. As it is my only good eye, I have to be careful.

Houston, We Have A Problem
Way back in 2005, in the throes of a very nasty, acrimonious divorce, I almost died. One moment I was sitting at a restaurant patio dining table having an evening meal with a friend, and the next I was suddenly fighting for my life.

Why Beehiiv Is The New Jewel In The Crown For Writers
Ask any professional financial advisor which is the best approach to investing and he or she will tell you that you should create a mixed portfolio. That portfolio should include investments for the short, medium and long term. You should also have a mix of risks, from low-risk, low return to high-risk, high return. As a freelance writer, that is also how you should go about progressing your career.

How To Earn Up To 20K on Beehiiv!
The great thing about Beehiiv is the way you can earn a lot of money in at least three ways! The first of course is by use of monetisation. By now, we all know how that works. People pay a monthly or yearly subscription and the money is paid out to you, minus Stripe fees, and in the case of Substack, a ten per cent commission for them.

A Writer's Marketing Journey
Today I am embarking upon a new journey in serialising one of my first books on my own site on The Opus Connection (the-opus-connection-com.ghost.io). I am following in the footsteps of such luminaries as Charles Dickens and Stephen King, who have each enjoyed success in charting this territory.

The Birth Of A New Beginning
For four years I have been playing around with having my own site. I designed six new sites on Wix and two on WordPress. However, I wasn’t happy with the results; it all got rather expensive. Over time I let the idea slip into the background. Then recently, that all changed.

The Writing Is On The Wall
In 2020 I came across Medium and it seemed like an oasis in the desert. Joining was a no-brainer. Over the following months, I made good progress and rose to become a Top Writer in various subjects, a Senior Editor for Illumination Publications, an owner of eight of my own publications and a top earner in the top two per cent. In all, I have written and published almost a thousand stories, almost all curated for wider distribution and life was rosy. Then all of a sudden it wasn’t. My stories stopped being curated and my income dived down to single digits. The dream come true was over. It was time to pivot.

How Time Flies
I was quite amazed to realize that it is eight months since I last wrote on my beloved Vocal Media. I had my reasons for stopping, which included a bout of ill health as well as a desire to dedicate myself to writing a few books. That 'few' books turned out to be twenty-six in the end, all self-published on Amazon KDP.

A Christmas Story
A few years ago I was living in my home town, Bethlehem PA, when I passed through a difficult time with my fiance. Despite thinking we were on the same page as far as our future was concerned, I slowly began to realise that in fact, we were worlds apart in terms of our hopes, ambitions and dreams. Jeff was a homeboy who wanted no more than to continue with his steady job at the local mall and find a nice home girl who just wanted to stay at home and have babies and cook and clean, all to satiate his selfish male desire to be in control of my entire life.

The Real Meaning Of Christmas
It is a sense of great sadness that I speak of the passing of Shane MacGowan of The Pogues. Clearly, the man was a tortured soul with serious alcohol and drug addictions. As somebody once said, all great artists are also piss artists. It seems that getting spaced out of your mind is all part and parcel of being a genius. Ultimately, it is a condition that inevitably leads to decline and self-destruction. All we are left with is a legacy of the art that such people created whilst they were alive and at their peak.
