The Long and Lonely Road
Typically distinguishable landmarks blurred together, whizzing past my windshield as tears blinded my vision. The hum of the road and the rumble of my engine under my white knuckles tetherd me to the present. I was heartbroken and headed to a place I hoped to find familiarity and safety. Images of my confessing ex flashed in my mind’s eye, her attempts at rationalizing her actions echoing in my ears. I knew we had started to grow apart. I had attributed the growing distance between us to her crazy school schedule. She had been so dedicated and studious. I planned to make lots of alone time for us when she graduated, and even began to plant seeds of hope for a future together. I was stunned, frozen to my spot when she finally admitted she went to a strip club and got physical with a classmate. She tried to blame being intoxicated and she couldn’t “really quite remember” what happened, but I could see through her web of lies as it was being spun. After she left for work, I grabbed my keys and left in search of a shoulder. I badly needed one to cry on.

Roast preparation begins with spices saturating in beef broth, ingredients trapped so that our dinner will be imbued by the flavors. Concoction rests in the spacious fridge for 12 hours before Mother transfers it into an ancient cracked dutch oven. A dense fog of pungent aromas permeates the cozy kitchen space as the meat cooks. I steal long breaths of pink peppercorn, rough sea salt, roasted paprika, roasted garlic, and chili powder.

Breaking and Entering. Top Story - August 2023.
Thank goodness for the last bell! Timmy threw his bag over his shoulder, raced to his locker, grabbed all of his books he would need, and bolted out the door. The sun was shining brightly down on a warm summer day and he was thrilled. As he began his two mile walk home from school, Timmy began to skip leisurely along the route.

Virtual Scales
“O! For a muse of fire, that would ascend the brightest heaven of invention” ~ William Shakespeare Glinting across the sky, her scales shone like a million rubies. I was trying to play a game of keep away with her, and failing more quickly than usual. I had a surprise and couldn’t wait to show her! “Sulfura, come quick! I’m caught,” I cry out as my leg gets entangled in a mess of vines. Gigantic, reptilian wings come swooping in from behind me and the rush of air envelops me when she comes to a halt. Her hot breath tickles my neck and I giggle as she lays her head on my shoulder.

Beyond the Nest
Once upon a rainforest, not so long ago, lived a small Scarlet Macaw named Darryl (that’s me). I was quite playful and my friends loved to call me Dary. The flock I lived with was not so big and not so small; I enjoyed knowing everyone and everyone knowing me! My parents would come and go while the young ones played in the center of my village.

The Green Death
My sleepy little town had nothing exciting to do, at all. Keeping myself entertained was a chore. I wasn’t much for school or keeping a long attention span. Hence why my nickname was Flit; I flit from one thing to another like a little hummingbird. My story starts the summer after my senior year. I was so glad to be done with school and could not wait till the fall so I could turn 18. I was born late in the year and my parents opted to keep me with my class. I didn’t really have a party in mind so I pulled out a notebook and started scrawling some ideas.
