Another headline. Another campus. Another wave of shattered innocence. The recent shooting at Florida State University in April 2025, where a 20-year-old student, Phoenix Ikner, opened fire near the student union, killing two people and injuring six others, serves as a stark and tragic reminder of a persistent American crisis. While the specific motive behind Ikner's actions, using a handgun that was once his police officer stepmother's service weapon, was reported by police as unclear in the immediate aftermath, with no apparent connection to the victims, the incident rips open familiar wounds and forces us once again to confront the terrifying reality of gun violence in our educational sanctuaries. Reports also emerged that Ikner had a history of white supremacist ideology and right-wing extremism, adding another layer to the complex, and often disturbing, picture of such tragedies. The shooter was ultimately shot by police and hospitalized.
