Memories & loss
We tell ourselves that we know, kind of, what's coming with age. We think we've seen and understood some of it with the passing of grandparents, and in how our own parents appeared to manage that; we may have seen a pragmatism in their farewells, a turning to their own families which is where their lives had already been focused for so long; 'parents in the past' maybe the best way to express it.

A family's life
And, with her passing from life as dementia took her, so too passed a family. She had been not 'just' that invisible glue that had held us together, these 3; she had been the driving force, the direction that we followed. Our destinations were hers, shared; our joys, hers, given.

The shape of family
The shape of my family was not what I thought, I see now as I look back. Mother, father, child, yes; but in the shapes and structures of our days, in the movements of our daily worlds, there was one driving force, one strong will holding the tiller, guiding the decisions that needed to be made, and held to, the plans that needed to be formed and followed, that oversaw the making of the many invisible brickworks that housed our shared life.

Time left to do
There are only so many tomorrows. This is something you only really start to truly, fully understand with years. I've found that it's usually those that go through hard years that truly appreciate this, because - in my experience - years eventually become something felt, not simply lived past.

Andrew, and the art of it all
I knew there was something familiar in what Andrew had painted, but I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what. There was something there that I’d seen before, but I couldn’t place it; the use of colours, or the simple, long strokes, or maybe the way the objects were closer to impressions than literal. I just couldn’t quite nail it down, though.
