Learning About What Happens During Sleep
Sleep is essential to our daily lives, playing a vital role in our ability to function and grow. Studies show that when animals are deprived of the sleep they need, they eventually die- clear evidence that sleep is necessary for survival in both animals and humans. Beyond sustaining life, sleep supports emotional regulation, promotes physical health, and enhances memory and learning. It also helps maintain optimal brain function by clearing out metabolic waste, bits of leftover material from the body’s chemical reactions that need to be removed. Throughout the lifespan, the brain’s neurons and their connections adapt, much like our sleep needs do as we grow in age, adjusting the junctions, which are connections between cells that help them stick together and communicate, between neurons in response to environmental challenges and new learning experiences.

The Ketogenic (Keto) Diet
The ketogenic diet, also known as the keto diet. A diet starting from the 1920s, mainly used for epilepsy, but also can be used for weight loss, managing type 2 diabetes, some neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s (however is still experimental), hormonal conditions like PCOS, and certain cancers (as a complementary therapy, it is very carefully supervised). It is usually used in children, generally for epilepsy, but can be seen for some adults, especially for weight loss (which is not recommended to use for children in that state).

Exploring the Psychological Impacts of Epilepsy. Content Warning.
I planned to explore the intersection of epilepsy and psychology. My goal was to connect with individuals who have epilepsy and who do not, and ask questions about their daily lives, as I was curious to know the differences and similarities of the lives. I got 8 people in each group, so 16 people total. To compare the lives as accurate as possible, I compared people of the same age.

The Man Who Shaped Me
In the silent, dim lit living room, sitting bored and quiet on the cushioned sofa, is something that I always used to do. The only time I would not be bulking and slouching on the sofa, was if I was smiling brightly when my dad was elegantly home and not, what I thought, sadly frowning at work. My dad was a truck driver, and I was a clingy, needy, and overly emotional 5-year-old daughter. My dad would leave for work and be gone for 2-3 days, and being a needy child who cherishes her dad’s presence, I would not allow him to leave very easily. I would cry, scream loudly, and just be overall as upset as a storm raging out. However, one day my dad was done with this crazy behaviour and decided to take me to work with him. I didn’t waste a second and rushed to my room to pack some things, and minutes later, I was bundled in my dad’s truck, joyful and cheery.
