Monday. Top Story - March 2024.
“Next!” She did not mean to shout, but she knew what the morning would be like. The people waiting in line would be buying stamps, picking up packages, check post office boxes, etc…and then buying whatever groceries they could find in the drugstore before heading to the café or the metro. The day they decided to put her job in the middle of the brightness of a drugstore was the day she should have quit. But she was still here, after the move, wearing the uniform that indicated some level of responsibility and experience.

Bitch
Got your attention, didn't I? Feeling like I might be pushing my luck with that title? Good. She won't mind. Hey, I am just a regular guy with the odd habit of occasionally sitting in front of this screen and spitting out stories from my life. Some of you know that I have lived overseas, that I am Canadian, black, male, teaching in Montréal with a weak grasp of French that does not really matter, come from an immigrant family, and have seen and done a lot of strange and unique things. You may even like my work and have commented on my successes and failures. But you do not know the whole story.

The Teacher Sonnet
Note: Well, I have been quite surprised by the response to the student's sonnet I wrote last week. And many of you said that you thought I should give the teacher a fair shot at a response. Here it is (and, once again, a very rough draft that may go through changes).

The Student Sonnet. Top Story - March 2024.
Note: I have pretty much been dead on my feet this week with the midterm exams, weather weirdness in Canada, and the usual obsessions and concerns over money and future work (thank you, stress headache...stressache?). So, this may not be my best work, but I think it explains where my head is at and what I have had to deal with...

Valentine's Ashes
“What is love? Oh baby, don’t hurt me… Don’t hurt me…no more…” - What Is Love – Haddaway (1993) It is interesting to me to reflect on the fact that the moment I saw this challenge – Love Unraveled – I thought of this mid-90s hit and its very bitter heart within the beats. Looking over the lyrics, it feels as though I am not alone in my feelings about love.

At the Gate...
If he had been able to cry without the wind creating these tears, it would be a pure moment of joy. The patch of gravel he stood on was quite wide and slippery, but he felt no fear. It was the other bodies around him that impressed him now, as did that view, and he could not move. It had taken him a long while to walk and beat the sun that touched the edge of the sky and blew away the darkness and strong shroud of clouds. There was the valley that he could see clearly now, and soon as he would make his way down the mountain. There was the path that was still visible in the dim light and dying mist that headed down the slope. With his fatigue, he thought that the chances of him making it up on time would not be a success, but here he was, tearing up at the joy in his eyes. The others were also trying to shed tears not whipped up by the wind and failing at the effort. But their emotions were raw and pure as they saw what the sun could do, what the clouds were hiding, and what their efforts at climbing and tracing their path led to; here, the highest point in the country.

Solvitur ambulando
It is a phrase that is said to have been created by Saint Augustine, meaning to refer to a problem which is solved by a practical experiment. Now, that is the direct Wikipedia definition, and I think that it can explain more about why I continue to do this.
