Bound By Contract
The courthouse smelled of old paper, wood polish, and the faint mustiness that seemed embedded in public buildings of a certain age. Emily stood before the justice of the peace, her hands trembling slightly as she held the small bouquet of white roses James had unexpectedly presented her with that morning. "The rings, please," the justice prompted. James produced two simple gold bands from his pocket. Nothing flashy or ostentatious—"better for the narrative," he'd explained when showing them to her earlier. "We'll say it was a whirlwind romance, that we wanted something traditional for now and may upgrade later." Everything about this day had been meticulously planned by James, from the private ceremony with just two of his colleagues as witnesses, to the "casual" meeting they'd have later with a photographer from a society magazine who'd been tipped off about the prominent lawyer's surprise wedding.

Bound By Contract
The law offices of Thornton & Associates occupied the entire twentieth floor of a sleek glass tower in the financial district. Emily stood in the elevator, watching the numbers climb higher, her stomach knotting with each floor. The reflective surfaces of the elevator showed her nervous expression and her outfit—the nicest she owned, a simple navy dress that suddenly seemed woefully inadequate for this environment. The subtle scent of her perfume, applied more liberally than usual this morning, mingled with the sterile, climate-controlled air of the elevator. She clutched her worn leather portfolio containing the café's financial statements, business plan, and hastily prepared notes about potential partnership structures—though she still couldn't imagine what a high-powered lawyer like James Thornton would want with her struggling café. The elevator dinged, and the doors slid open to reveal a reception area that exuded wealth and power. The furniture was all clean lines and neutral tones, with massive abstract paintings adorning the walls. The subtle scent of lemon polish and expensive air freshener replaced the recycled elevator air.

Bound By Contract
One week earlier ........ The espresso machine hissed loudly, releasing a cloud of fragrant steam that momentarily obscured Emily's view of the café. She breathed in deeply, savoring the rich, bitter aroma of freshly ground coffee beans that permeated everything in Brewed Awakening—her sanctuary for the past three years.

Bound By Contract
The towering glass skyscraper loomed over Emily Chen as she stood at the entrance of Thornton & Associates, her fingers tightening around the strap of her worn leather bag. The contrast between her modest outfit—a simple navy dress and scuffed heels—and the sleek, modern luxury of the law firm’s lobby wasn’t lost on her. She took a deep breath, inhaling the sterile scent of polished wood and expensive cologne, and stepped inside.
