Footsteps in the Dark
Jessie sat in the car, their forehead pressed against the top of the steering wheel. Somehow, they managed a slow, deep inhale and exhale, and relaxed their body. The drive so far had been grueling, and there was still quite a bit left of the trip. The closest town with a hotel was still almost an hour away at this point. Not quite a quarter of the way into the trip, Jessie wondered why they had even thought this was a good idea in this weather, let alone at night.

This post was originally posted on Medium on April 29, 2022. Today I got kicked out of a Facebook group for speaking up about “one-size-fits-all” forms of recovery. I didn’t attack anyone, I didn’t swear. In fact, it was probably one of the most level-headed statements I’ve made about this.

Early Morning Meetings
Returning home from a vacation is rarely exciting. Sure, the comforts of your own space, your bed, and your town can be calming and relaxing, but the enjoyment of travel and adventure usually far outweigh the “typical” day of being back home. Especially when you’re in the midst of a career transition, and being home means returning to the mind-numbing frustration of your day job, and the evening exhaustion (albeit worthwhile) of building your business.

The Hidden Outpost
The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. Outside the window, the sky was grey and bleak. It was hard to tell whether it was due to the smoke that she could smell hanging in the air, or if the sky was overcast - like in the books she had read.
