How My Anxiety Taught Me Empathy
For many years I believed that my anxiety was nothing but a flaw that held me back. It always seemed to arrive at the worst possible moments. Whenever I needed to stay calm, enjoy myself with friends, or focus on something important, anxiety would come crashing in. My heart would pound, my thoughts would spin in circles, and I often wished there were a switch I could flip to turn it off. I imagined that life would be so much easier without it, that I would be free to move through the world with ease and confidence.

Living with my cat Lily has been one of the most entertaining parts of my life. She is sweet, sassy, and just unpredictable enough to keep me on my toes. If you have ever shared your home with a cat, you will probably recognize a few of these moments, but through Lily’s quirks they have become my everyday stories.

Watching From the Outside
This piece comes from my own experience of watching a family member struggle with addiction. I’ve seen how it changes a person—their behavior, health, choices, and relationships. I’ve tried every word I could think of, but nothing seemed to reach them. Writing this poem was my way of putting those feelings into something I could hold onto, even when I felt powerless.
