She gets me
I didn’t want to admit it right away, no one ever does, but deep down I knew she was right. We’d been friends for almost a decade and roommates for a couple years. She knew me like well loved book she read countless times. I started to open up more and more, like chapters unfolding before her. She knew before I allowed myself to know, based on observations vocal reflection and body movement alone. It’s not easy to admit you’re autistic as an adult, and it’s definitely not any easier to have someone else suggest you may be, either. It’s some weird territory you have to learn to walk in. Almost like you’re sand walking in the Dune universe, but with gravity that sucks you down and then pushes you away. She taught me how to walk through uncharted territory, to move the way I was resisting, and it never seemed out of place.

Jack-O-Lantern
Jackie had always felt unlucky. Now that she was 13 years old, she felt EXTRA unlucky. So, it was no real shock to her that she ended up sick from tucking into just one piece of Halloween candy early. She was only a few houses deep Trick or Treating when she started to feel sick. It was just her luck to have Halloween end early, or really it was her complete lack of luck. She sat in her window seat and sighed, cursing herself for having to give into that piece of candy early. Her mother told her to rest but she was fighting her stomachache, hoping she could sneak out for a little more of All Hallow’s Eve fun and antics.

Spectrum
She had been in the shadows for so long yet now she had become the light, literally. She was just the quiet autistic kid who was too afraid of being judged to make connections. She only had one solitary friend she could trust and even telling him seemed anxiety ridden. He would probably just scream anyway and possibly pass out, Cooper wasn’t very good at handling major news or excitement.

Home in Halloween
I’m not quite sure where my obsession with Halloween began. I have loved the spooky season as far back as I can remember. The sights, the scents, the scares and more. So many positive memories in my life involve Halloweentime. Maybe it was the witch in Wizard of Oz, maybe it was my love of movies like Beetlejuice at an early age. Whatever the reason, I have no regrets. I truly love Halloween. I’m one of those people who has Halloween decorations up inside my house year round. Our Christmas tree is black and covered in Halloween and Horror ornaments. Yes, I even make Santa’s season a little spooky. I can’t help myself! His shadow is Krampus, after all!
