No New Heroes
This is something of a love/hate letter to overused tropes in both fantasy novels and old school Japanese Role-Playing games. Where a chosen one is "found" because of prophecy. It's always been so odd to me having read and played so many. I hope you all enjoy.

Prison dare
Walking through an abandoned prison was not my idea of fun. But a dare is a dare and I'm not going to be the guy who said no to a date. If I did, my time in highschool would be officially over. I was carrying a video camera with me to record the experience because everyone was too chicken to come with me. I had just moved to this town so I had to cement myself amongst my classmates immediately or I would be doomed to obscurity. According to one of the kids who gave me the dare this prison was left abandoned about ten years ago. Reports of abuse and the like had been coming out of the prison for years as well as a number of "missing" inmates.

Deals
Three hours ago the sky was clear, the wind at our backs, and the sea was wonderfully calm. Me and my men were singing and drinking after a successful raid on a small port village. Now we were in the middle of a raging storm and a maelstrom that had opened in the middle of it all. On top of that cannonballs were flying past and occasionally hitting the ship. The cannonballs were from an English Navy ship that had been dispatched just for us. I'll admit I did feel special at this moment.

Yasa's Necklace
Staring up the mountain path I was starting to rethink my life choices. It wasn't that the path was particularly difficult but the snow just wouldn't stop. Even a couple of inches worth of snow could make the easiest path turn deadly. But it's not like I have anywhere to go so I start pushing forward. According to the locals I talked to at the last village there should be an abandoned church somewhere up this path. It would be a good place to make a base camp. I walk slowly testing each step to make sure I'm not just going to drop off into god knows where.

Foggy Mornings
Five o'clock every morning I woke up. I set coffee to boil, I turned on the lights, and I took a look outside. Every morning a dense fog covered the ground stretching all over my farm. The fog rolled in from the river about a mile away no matter what. One morning I looked out and saw five people standing in the mist. I walked out of my home calling to them, "Hello! Good morning to you." The people turned and vanished into the fog.

Disguises
Fregoli syndrome is a real disorder. It is defined in the DSM-5 as "A rare disorder in which a person holds a delusional belief that different people are in fact a single person who changes appearance or is in disguise." I studied up on this affliction when I created a tabletop game where the players were in an insane asylum and they took real mental afflictions for their characters. This writing, while a little odd and disjointed, is an attempt to write from the point of view of someone who suffered from this.

The Lighthouse of Mantum
My name is Tomaine and I'm a light keeper. I tend to a lighthouse on a small remote island called Mantum. While my location is remote it is quite important to many of the major trade routes. There is always a storm going on even if it's a light one so it is always wet no matter what. Ships stop at my small harbour once every three months to bring me food and supplies. I came here after the previous light keeper Pollie mysteriously disappeared. He was assumed to be dead since it looked like the lighthouse had been raided. But a body was never found.

Man of the Mountain
Lightning crashed and thunder roared across the landscape. I sat in a cave watching the rain pour down while I held my hands over a small fire. I had found this cave twenty minutes before the rain came and had decided to hunker down for the night. Unfortunately it was really just a small hole cut into the side of the mountain. If it started flooding I'd be in a bad place really fast. Thankfully though the rain just washed down the mountain and was gone come the morning.

The Fountain of Youth
I finally found it. The fountain of youth. Though I guess it would be better to call it a lake. I'm one hundred and four now and I've been searching for over seventy years for this. My body is old, my mind is finally starting to slip, and my will has been fading but I finally found the fountain. So it wasn't in vain and everything I've lost to find it can be mine again. The fountain was within a vast forest where the trees hugged so close together that at some points it had been almost impossible for me to continue forward. But I had hobbled, crawled, and literally flung myself forward in my pursuit.
